Loved Gary Carter. Our local team, Norfolk Tides, was the farm team for the Mets from 69 to 06 when they switched to the Nats. Lots of Mets fans around here. 57 man....too young.

In the 80's, I would send baseball cards to players with a self addressed stamped envelope. This was before the autograph craze, and superstar players would just send the card back signed. Nolan Ryan, Wade Boggs, Mike Schmidt, you name it. Gary Carter sent me the card back, unsigned, with a form letter that said he wouldn't sign it, because Topps made something called Garbage Pail Kids, and he thought they were anti-family. I was so pissed. With that being said, RIP Gary. Brain Tumor is a horrible way to go.

Years ago I remember reading a story in Sports Illustrated about the 86 Mets. The crux of the story was how they partied all the time and it chronicled some wild stories. Anyways, on long cross country flights, the party guys would sit in the back of the plane and gamble,drink etc.. Gary Carter was a front of the plane guy and was made fun of by guys like Straw, Hernandez, Backman for being religious and clean living.
