Being a kid in '76, I thought the number 7 was lucky. Every time we went to the races, there was another 7 in the mini class. I got tired of being 7ducttape so I put a 1 in front of the 7 and a 9 behind it. Thus 179. I ran 177 in the early 80's because someone already had 179 in the GNC here in Texas.

Prior to racing I ran a big #1 on my Hodaka, Then started out racing with District 36's epic number 69j, Everyone wanted to know how I came to acquire such a cool number...at 15 I hadn't a clue.
189q was my next, but sprang up in points for 77 to #5 for CMC Nor Cal in 78, I also ran 635 for a National number that one and only year. After no racing for 3 years I started making shit up...140, then to 14 to simplify buying numbers. It got to where a half dozen of us were showing up with the same KW number so I went with my age & 49, six years ago.

26, 217, then 457. No reason, just thought they were cool numbers at the time.

Way back in the day in 1983, my favorite riders as a kid were Mark Barnett #2 and Rick Ryan #56...

When I started racing back in 1969, there was no place to buy numbers. So the next best thing was to buy contact paper and cut your own out. 38 was the hardest number to cut out so I went with that. I never ran into anyone else with the same number for years. You seen a lot of 1, 4 an 7 in different orders.

When I run #'s, I like to run 506, because I'm the fifth of six siblings in my family. So, I'm 506, see? Cool

I used to run whatever was assigned to me for that season (state / national mx)....or that event (enduro). But after many years off from injury and slowly getting back into racing this year, I'm going with #874. 74 was this first ever number I had when I was a kid, and the #8 is for a friend who lost his battle with cancer when he was 19. He was always that little bit faster than me, so the theory is if I run his number (apart from honouring him in my own way), hopefully a bit of his speed will transfer to me....that, and the feeling he'll be looking out for me, riding with me Smile

71..... because it was my Dad's number, so I run it as a tribute to him.

124 because the AMA said the last 3 digits of your AMA number was the rule! Go AMA!

Ditto on the contact paper numbers! I forgot about that. However, my first race on my 1973 LT3-MX Yamaha had the number 26 made from electrical tape.

I was #45 for a long time growing up, but when my brother retired, and i moved to Kawi's (what he rode) i switched to #28 to carry on his legacy.

That is why i fully root for guys who run #28, like the year Dungey did, and now Rattray is 28 for life! I was so stoked when Gibby scored me one of his jerseys.

Dad suggested 327 after the small-block Chevrolet engine.

243...Race on the 2nd row, so hence the #2 and my brother is 244, so I went with 243. Didn't like how 245 looked.

I was seven years old when I got an xr70 as my first bike. 7 also happened to be my favorite number. By the time I started racing, it became #74 (My number and RC's #) Than I wanted to keep the 74, but needed to change my number at a race so I threw on the 9. Been running 974 ever since.
