Don`t know his prognosis but he`s palling around with April Hodges so i`d say he`s making a pretty good recovery.

Got a very serious head injury and from what i remember the doctors said one more concussion could make some serious permanent damage. He made the decision to just live his life and took the safe route. He's done racing. It's sad but i respect his decision. I think i remember him saying there's a lot more to life than riding. Hope he's successful in whatever he does in life.

Smart guy. That had to be a tough decision. Hope he is successful in whatever he chooses.

In RacerX this month he said he basically had to re-learn to do everything...including eating/swallowing.

For the record, ALL brain damage is permanent. Brain cells do not regenerate. The brain however can compromise and find new neuro pathways around damaged areas.

I watched the accident happen right in front of me and I honestly thought he was dead upon impact. No matter how many times I've been down and have seen other riders go down there is something especially unnerving about seeing a fit, athletic person lying on the track prone and motionless. I'm glad that he has made such a good recovery.

Smart young man. I wonder if such thoughts may be creeping into Trey Canard's head these days? He obviously hasn't had a brain injury but Trey came very close to perhaps a serious spinal cord injury.

Terry is right, I'm going through some shitty stuff right now from the accumulation of concussions over the years. What the doctors are telling me isn't the greatest of news and now I'm at the point to where I have to make the decision of never riding again. A blow to the head for me now could easily end up as permanent lights out........or so I'm told.

talked to him a couple months ago, he said physical therapy was going good and he was starting to feel better and better each day. such a bummer it happened to him, i thought he had a lot of potential to be a top guy in the lites class

I hope you make the right choice for you. I think the sport can still be fun even if you are not the guy in the saddle. Good luck.

That's a old wives tale, while a series of concussions do cause serious damage, if the brain really couldn't reproduce brain cells and all damage was permanent then even a couple concussions could leave you with a huge gap in knowledge and memory. The brain actually contains stem cells.

No, not ALL brain damage is permanent. Brain cells do regenerate over time, and also depending on the where the damage is done. Stating that 'the brain can compromise new pathways around damaged areas' is completely wrong. For example, if the Limbic System is damaged (controls sense of smell), then it is affected depending on the degree of damage, the loss of sense of smell cannot be compromised by the Cerebellum because that is responsible for posture, balance etc. The brain is extremely complex, as every section is responsible for something so important. I think Trettel has damaged his cerebellum, which is obviously a huge deal. Also, yes i study physiology at university.

In the March issue of Racer X, there's a small update on him, saying how he hopes to go to College and then become involved in the Industry, or help people who are suffering with the same injury he has.

Then you need to get your money back from said university, read below.

"4: Brain Damage Is Always Permanent"

"Brain damage can be caused by anything from an infection to a car accident, and it essentially means the death of brain cells."

"If neurons are damaged or lost, they can't grow back -- but the synapses, or connections between neurons, can. Essentially, the brain creates new pathways between neurons. In addition, areas of the brain not originally associated with some functions can take over and allow the patient to relearn how to do things."

These are quotes from medical books on brain injuries.

When I broke my pelvis and back in 1988, I had to be put on a mcahine that told my brain where my legs were, basically regrowing the connections. I was told I would never walk again, 10 months later I walked out of the hospital and apart from atmosphere pressure changes, have no real problems with pelvis or back even though my pelvis has permanent 2 inch gaps on both sides and I ride as often as I can.

Think of pulling apart a wishbone, that is how my pelvis is broke. Back healed up but I (almost) had the same injury as Pastana where the spine comes completely away from the pelvis. Remarkably I have NO permanent damage from that except the pelvis gaps.

ROTFLMFAO!!!!! As soon as i read TK's post I knew, just KNEW, that some doofus was gonna claim he was wrong!!!!! LMFAO!!!! Bunch of morons in here.

TK is right BUT, there is one part of the brain that does regenerate cells (but only one) and it is a very small part (something like the hypothalamus, but I'm too lazy to look it up just to prove anything to you goobers).

Good job TK. You're 99% right.

"I studied math at Fresno State"....doesn't make me a fucking mathematician dude.

TK was right and MotoX85 is right in agreeing with TK.

This place never ceases to amaze me with all the keboard "experts" on EVERYTHING.

The cerebral cortex in adult monkeys have been found to regenerate cells by Princeton University in 1999. As they assume it will also apply to humans, no information is provided that humans do the same.

"In a startling discovery that could have profound implications for treating brain disorders and injuries, researchers at Princeton University have discovered that new neurons are continually being added to the brains of adult monkeys. The neurons are added to the cerebral cortex of the brain. "

I'm not an expert on this by any means and I can only pass on what the doctors have been telling me. These past 3 weeks I've been dealing with some bad problems from past concussions that just now decided to affect me for whatever reasons. I've seen many doctors and specialist because of it, and from what they all seem to say there is no such thing as a minor brain injury and once you have one.....you are way more likely to have more because the brain never heals 100% from the first injury.
I could be wrong, but like I said.....all the doctors I've seen these past 3 weeks have said the same thing.

Thanks Chris and Dirty for the well wishes.

What do those "doctors" know with all their fancy degrees and white coats? Pffffft. If you want medical answers, there is only place to go: Vital MX.

I read that NFL helmets have a feature in them that if a player has a suspected spinal or neck injury, they can inflate the helmet padding to force the helmet off of the player's head so that they don't have to tug at the helmet to get it off which prevents causing any further damage from trying to de-helmet the player. Is the AMA using any of this technology? I don't think it would help in most situations but it seems like relatively simple technology that it wouldn't have a huge cost impact on the sport and it's just another preventative measure that could potentially help.
