Stewart's Tiregate

1/10/2012 6:15am
What many people in here fail to take into consideration is how immense contracts are these days.

You guys just act like this sponsorship consisted of a cash transfer and a bunch of tires. That's not how these things work; there are teams of lawyers that negotiate every detail of a deal like this. Be certain that if Pirelli didn't want James running another brand's tires in practice it would be in the contract WITH PENALTIES.

Does anyone remember rc had a contract to run berik boots I think it was but instead wore astars or fox boots with a berik label over top?

JBone said before the start of the season they are not worried about contracts or having to promote a product. They will breach a contract if it means getting the best part possible on the bike.

I think JGR should get a Suzuki, paint it blue, call it a Yamaha, and see if he sets the fastest practice time in Phoenix.

I want to know why, yesterday, the only rig left in the lot at anaheim, was the JGR/TOYOTA/JS7 rig??

If that was the case there would be lawsuits happening on a weekly basis. Top pros running "disguised" products has been going on for years.
It would be one thing if js7 / jgr did this at their private tracks during the offseason while they were testing…..it’s another to do it at A1 in front of the entire SX community (i.e. Glover and Dunlop)….big difference mi amigo!

Because Loren Lowery (he was the rig driver for San Manuel Yamaha and didn't go to JGR with JS7) went to work for Jeff Ward Racing?

Oh the drama! LOL

If you were suspecting that there may be a tire issue and you had a practice or two to sort things out why wouldn't you run a different tire just to set a benchmark. I'm sure getting a dunlop from another team was pretty easy. At any rate Stewart didn't run this tire in the race; it was practice.

Gotcha, didn't seem like the other thread was getting any "traction"

Let's say within the last 5 yrs and please be specific.
Cool
I know a lot of teams contracted to other lubricant manufacturers but in reality use another brand Wink

Ask Mitch if he really used Splitfire's

I can understand that Pirelli and Dunlop have interests they want to protect, but I am having a hard time getting worked up about this. In fact, I think I just exhausted my interest contributing to this thread, my contribution being about as meaningful as a dime tip.

Jeff Ward Racing is the rebadged L&M Racing, so Loren actually stayed in the same spot.

Tim Dixon's the driver at Toyota/JGRMX/Yamaha.

I'm starting to think this whole brouhaha is simply meant to drive traffic to promototalk.com...! Somewhere, Matthes is laughing and Glover and McCarty are just shaking their heads wondering why we care...

It happens all the time, gloves, boots, goggles, knee braces, tires, bars, grips, etc. Top guys run competitors products with different/altered logos every race.

If it woulda been Milsaps running a Dunlop nobody would care....

A couple years ago the entire Kawi Factory off road team was sponsored by Pro Circuit (with the stickers on their suspension) and not a single one of them was actually running Pro Circuit suspension.

Pirelli had 3 or 4 guys at the race in the JGR pits so If they cared they would've said something. Hell the Pirelli guys are probably the ones that put the tire on.

Remember Reeds goggle switch last year. That was hushed instantly.

As far as I understand it, this is not cheating: they were using a tire legal for competition.

They were probably in the wrong for having possession, legally speaking. I am guessing that's in the contract.

Pirelli was not hurt: they are developing a tire in conjunction with JGR and must be interested in understanding if it is the bike or the tire. Without knowing, the tire cannot be developed well.

This is why Matthes is the best moto journalist bar none.

Pirelli had people at the race in JGR's pits.

If they really cared they would've said something at the race.

The NASCAR side at JGR had some extra tires laying around that James wanted to test. He said he liked them so I'd say you will see them this weekend at Phoenix with it being a little more hard packed.

Haha, I mean "techinically" it's the same thing right? And it's common knowledge to anybody with half a brain that it happens, so why aren't any of the "lawyers" on here in an uproar about it.

If I had to guess, he was feeling something not normal from the bike and he wanted to try out some tires he was very familiar with to make sure it was the bike and not the tires, seems to me like its a team/rider leaving no stone unturned to make sure they have the best package possible. By god I'm on board with that, JGR is the shit and they are going to bring this sport to the next level equipment wise!

Frackin Anaheim!

I'm guessing JGR is in contract with Pirelli throughout this year else, why wouldn't they ditch the 100k for Dunlop.

I do remember it, but it's still happening every week every time they take a drink of it, so why aren't the same people callng for lawyers in this thread freaking out about that?

Like I said, if Millsaps rides the first practice with a Dunlop there wouldn't even be a thread on here about it....
