I've been looking for a 1982 RM250 for a while now and I finally found a low hour, unrestored bike about five miles from home. I picked it up yesterday from the second owner that has owned it since '86. The seller said the original owner trail rode it a couple of times and he put another 25-30 hours of trail riding on it over the years. The bike is 100% original and complete with the exception of one number plate bolt and a set of Renthal bars that installed last night. The original dryrotted Bridgestone tires have never even been off the rims, which are perfect. The tank, seat and exhaust are also in excellent condtion. Nice bonuses where the first owners bill of sale and the owners manual. Unfortunately the bike spent some tiime exposed to UV light so the fenders, shrouds and number plates are bleached out. Free beer for anyone with a line on any NOS plastics. With new plastic, a set of tires and fresh fluids, I think she'll be ready for a little vintage racing in the Evolution class.

Here are a couple of pics after a few hours of scrubbing last night.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think that will work with the DLS backing plate.
The boss for the DLS backing plate is located approximately on the red line.

Got my bikes from Marc at FullFloater.com late yesterday. Excellent work! Unfortunately, the DG silencer (exactly as you predicted, Cam) is too short and kills the top-end.

So I'm going to have Jon at JEMCO fab a silencer. How long is the stock silencer (overall, and the silencer itself), and, do you think it would be a good idea to maybe go even longer?

James, the perforated core section of the stock silencer is 12" long.

Check out Pro Form pipes. They look really trick and they work really well. They are out of Ontario, CA.

On the wheel - I meant to tell you, I actually scored one for $10 bucks (+$25 shipping) on ebay late last week...in decent condition.. score!! They normally go much higher. but thanks for looking for me..much apprec
casedit, I finally got around to taking off the '83 rear wheel. Here's what yours should look like.

The special steel/aluminum spacer goes on the chain side with the steel facing in.

The thinner aluminum spacer goes on the brake side. There is a thin (15X28X1) steel shim under the zinc plated steel cap.

The collared steel bushing goes into the backing plate from this side.

Awesome Cam... huge thanks for taking the time to confirm that for me.

When I bought the bike it came with completely wrong spacers and was really confusing - the parts diagrams aren't the clearest either. Now I can have some faith that it's on correct and I wont chew through bearings!

There were two on ebay last year, but I'm not sure if they are still available. The OEM silencer was still available through suzuki last time I checked.

yah there aren't any currently on ebay.. the stock pipe on mine looks like frankenstein and was repaired and welded while it was on the bike making getting it back on impossible, man did I choose a rat to start with. A hasty decision that has this project budget almost double what I thought it would be...every single thing in this resto has fought me.. but I keep fighting! the only original parts re-used are the frame, engine, airbox and rear-shock... everything else has been either upgraded or in need of replacement - makes me realize what a gem you found!!

I do have the stock silencer still though. I'll keep my eye out for a pipe, not into dropping big coin on a pro-form at the moment. Thanks Cam

Cam, I saw that you were looking for a good quality tank for an '83 RM125. Try Marc Shade at FullFloater.com. You can also sign up for the Full Floater page on FB, plenty of discussion and swapping goes on there. Henk Harms, redelsinore on eBay, Henk has lots of NOS parts, including for RMs, in fact I scored an NOS 88 RM250 tank from him a couple of years back.

Thanks for the tips! My wife's unrestored '83 RM125 is nearly mint in every detail but the left side of the tank has some spider webbing that concerns me. The bike really deserves a new tank.

Thanks Sully. Based on the wear on the bike, I think it may have about 10 hours on it. I installed new tires because the originals were dry rotted, and new fenders because they had faded to white. Everything else is original, unrestored.

That is a nice bike CamP :-)
Since there is a number of RM vintage bikes on the go here wouldn't it be a good idea to have a " RM Tips and tricks" thread?
At least i would need some tips and tricks ;-)

Anyway i found a DLS front brake plate on ebay that i would like to have on the rm 465 to stop things a little better.
It went for $117 and with $58 shipping that was just too much :-(
Are they really that rare an expensive?

Thanks, johan. The RM DLS setups pop up on ebay and Mark's swapmeet occasionally. I got a complete 84 RM front end off ebay for $150. In addition to the DLS brake plate, you'll also need the correct front wheel and left fork slider to make it work so finding a complete front end is the best way to go. I saw a complete 84 RM125 front end somewhere recently but I can't remember where I saw it. I'll post a link if I come across it again.

Yes, the hubs won't interchange. The DLS hubs are smaller in diameter. The DLS left fork slider is also different, but a 83/84 fork slider will fit on your 82 RM465 forks. Buying the entire front end off a bike with DLS front brakes ensures that you don't get any mismatched parts that won't work.

Are you sure about that? I have 82 forkset and an 84/85 forkset. (I think) The 82 uses a 6mm bolt while the 84/85 has a much larger threaded adjuster in the bottom. Are you changing out the damper rods too? I am having trouble finding fork tubes that have good chrome. Everything out there seems to be pitted. I'm thinking of just putting a YZ465 front end on and being done with it.

I'm probably wrong about the 82 43mm fork slider. I have a mishmash of 83-87 43mm fork parts and all of that stuff swaps.

Try Lee at On The Pipe Racing for some good 43mm stanctions. When I discovered that one of my stanctions was bent on the 84 ebay forks, he hooked me up with a set of 87 RM forks that were in good shape and I used the stactions off of them.
