Hi All,

My GF gave the OK to put her kid on a bike finally...woo hoo! He has never ridden except on the back of a TTR a few times, he's 7 yrs old and I hope I can infect his with this dirty disease. He already knows all the pro riders by name an number and bike type so that rocks.

Sat him on a CRF80 and was too big. So I figure the XR/CRF 70 will be perfect, and it has the semi-auti which is cool for the first time rider.

Now, what other bikes do you think would be suitable? I cant put him on a KX CR YZ RM LEM COBRA - YET...dont wanna scare the crap outta him...and it's only for trail riding really.

Suggestions?

TIA - Sean

Wow I just looked at the TTR110 - the seat height is almost comparable! And e-start would be nice for him although I do believe it's better he learn to kick it over, maybe disconnect battery for that part.

I'll look at the KLX now thanks a lot!

I would still get him on a honda 50 for a couple of rides, its the perfect bike to learn on even if you are an adult!

You know I thought a lot about that, but it's just so small! I think he'll outgrow it too quick and his mom wont be so keen to buy another bike the same season....

My son is 7 and rides a KTM 50 SR. Cool thing about these is you can throw the JR clutch inside the Sr and it mellows out the power and enables the kid to ride the bike at low rpm and at take off's when beginning to ride Also they are much lighter and more nimble than the 70/110 Then once the kid advances in skill throw the sr clutch back in.

Look for a PW 80, has an auto clutch with a 3 speed trans and you get the sweet 2 stroke vibe. They can easily be choked down if it has too much go juice initially and are like having money in the bank (as are all the little bikes) when you want to move him up. I would not buy new as he will just out grow it anyway.

The CRF70 is a decent choice - not much wrong with that pick.

Good Idea, my son started on the pw 50 but quickly outgrew its capabilitys so we got him a ktm 50 mini adventure, fully automatic, adjustable suspension so when they grow the bike can gro with him. He rode that bike from 6 - 9yrs old, he was a bit small for his age, so at 9 (this spring) he was getting a bit big for it( small groth spirt) we moved him to a ktm 50 sx, also with adjustable suspension and a much stronger motor (liquid cooled, better pipe etc). My son likes to jump so the suspension was a big part of our decision, there isnt a bike out there for kids that compares in that department.

Start on a PW50, then a KTM mini Adventure 50, then KTM 50 Pro Jr, then KTM Pro SR 50, KTM 65, KTM 85, then any 125 2T, any 250 2T, any 250F, then your favorite 450F.

Agree 100% on the KTM Mini Adventure, those are great little beginner bikes. Also, I think it is important not to have Estart at this age, they need to learn how to start their own darn bikes, not just push a button.

Your right doesn't hurt to get them something a litlle big as they will grow into it. The xr70s are an awesome start, they will haul a full grown adult around pretty well , and the suspension isn't that bad either. No clutch is nice so they can learn to ride with out that added step to worry about. You could probably find a real nice used one and when it is outgrown ,you probably could sell it for near the same price. I had one for each of my kids when they learned to ride and they were great.

You can't beat a KLX110. THey offer the standard version and the KLX110L which has a clutch and longer suspension. Did I mention there are a ton of aftermarket parts for them?

the KTM 50's are RACE bikes,

the 70/110 are trail bikes., all the XR/CRF 70's are semi auto ( nice to learn)

teach riding skills before racing skills.

Too small is way better than too big for the first bike. Mx is about confidence. If the bike intimidates him he won't exell.

The CRF/XR70 are almost identical in size and weight to the KLX110. But the KLX has slightly more power and about a million times more aftermarket parts. Just suggesting you think about the future. The kid will outgrow it and you can then have yourself or him a great pitbike.

how big is this 7 yr old like others said start him off on a honda 50. they hold there value well so you could get him one used and not lose any money on it when you sell it. most of the ktms/ cobras are about 90 lbs,. the ttr50/honda 50s are around 115-120. those 110s are 130+.(all great bikes) my kid started on a honda 50 as well as my daughter. great starter bike. see where it goes from there whether they just ride or get more into it like mx

My son had an easier time on the ktm 50, than the honda 50 or 70. Just my EXPERIENCE ! I tried all three cause i happened to own them all and still ended up buying the ktm 50 to LEARN ON. Guess my kid just gets it.. also make sure the kid can ride a bmx bike very well before going into the moto thing.

It seems the XR70 is the most affordable used bike out of all that are mentioned really.

My son got that as his transition bike from the PW to the RM65.....that XR70 was bulletproof.
No stalling on the gate, no can't shift it right and no clutches for you to have to replace every week.

He could run that thing till it ran out of gas and then run it some more.

I highly recommend the XR70, my son loved it.

I just old my 2000 XR70 that I bought off craiglist for $200. It was a little bit of a project but my boy had to earn the money for the parts it needed and learn how to fix it. He had no clue about shifting or riding and it was his first bike. We had an awesome time on it this summer and at Unadilla! Now that he learned the basics its time for a bigger bike with a clutch. All the parts we bought off eBay and they were dirt cheap! It made him respect and appreciate it much more having to buy and fix it himself. We sold it last week for $500! I think I was more sad to see it go than him! I'm looking on craiglist everyday for another one that needs a little work for myself and Unadilla next year! Woohoo
