Next step, throw some more money at it!! Smile

What ignition is on it?
Everything grounded properly through all that powdercoat?
And last but not least considering it is a Maico , it probably has something to do with that puddle of water nearby!!! Sorry, had to throw that in there.

If worse comes to worst I can get you a deal on a PVL ignition. If it already has a PVL and you need parts for it, I can get those too.

Remove the kill switch from the handlebar and remove all the zip ties holding the kill switch wire to the frame and handlebars. Check for spark again. Did you remove the paint from the frame where the coil mounts? If you have some extra length in the plug wire, pull the wire from the cap and cut off enough to expose some clean new wire and put the cap back on. Do you have a standard plug cap or a resistor cap? If you have a resistor cap, remove the resistor and replace it with a piece of copper or brass of the same size as the resistor or install a non resistor cap. B8ES spark plug? Original Motoplat ignition? MIne had no spark after restoration and it turned out to be the kill switch that was grounding out. because of a single strand of wire poking through the wire insulation.

I had taken the powder off the frame where it connects with the coil. It's the stock Motoplat. I'll have to go check the plug numbers. .

Laughing

We used to have a Maico fanatic race in our club back in the early-mid 90's and the Penton guys were always giving him the "Maico-Breako" grief. He shows up with a jersey and on the back of it read : I'd rather push a Maico than ride a Penton. Funny shit, even made it into Cycle News from the Steamboat Springs AHRMA coverage in '92 or '93.

Did it run prior to the restoration? If it did, It is likely to be something simple like a bad ground, broken wire, or loose connection.

These old motoplats are known for the magnets getting weak overtime and also just giving up.
This links my help if you want to do some tests:

Also do a search for motoplat testing. A good amount of helpful info is out there.

Just do yourself a favor and replace it with a PVL or MZB ignition. I've used PVL, but all of my 2 out of my 5 maicos currently run MZBs. When the other 2 enduro ignitions give the ghost I'm replacing them with MZBs, and the the MX bike with a PVL.

Here's a link:

I also have a vintage buddy who rebuilds motoplats ( he's done 2 for me), but he's currently at winter home in florida and won't be back north until March.

I think it is very well made, but in the older motor you have to cut the cover for a rubber grommet for the wires. The connecter for the wiring is to big for the hole in the cases. You could cut the wires and put new connecters in the wires. I’m not done with the motor, so I can’t say how it run’s. But the price is a 1/3 less than a PVL. Just wish they would make it easier for the older motor to put on.
