I know this sound like a dumb question. Do any of the top riders wear glasses or contacts? I never see any of them wearing glasses, maybe they just don't use contacts or glasses during the race? You would think it would be tough wearing contacts in a 30 min + 2 lap moto in 100 degree heat with goggles on. I was just thinking about this because my 4 year old had to get glasses today and I would like for him to do some sx/mx in the near future.

That is an interesting one i never really thought of, you would think more riders did, one that really comes to mind was Larry Brooks.

Maybe look into prescription lenses if you don't want to wear some type of prescription goggle underneath the goggle lenses. I've seen people wear the prescription goggles underneath their paintball masks so I'd guess it could work with MX goggles.

definitely not a pro, but i used to wear glasses, they were okay for the most part, just had to keep my hair out of my goggles (hockey hair haha) in high humidity they fogged up a little bit. Switched to contacts and never really had a problem, just had to make sure the goggles formed a good seal with my face!

There used to be a company called Proview that made prescription goggles. Also, I've seen quite a few kids in little league football wear goggles for glasses (prescription goggles).

I wear contacts. Couple of years ago I used to race the local pro level in Reno, Nv. It gets pretty toasty there and we would do 20 min motos. The only problems I have had were not blinking due to a good battle or some intense section which intern dried them out posibally causing them to move on the eyeball and, getting that little piece of dirt in your goggles after a good roost. Other then that I still wear them to this day. If I didnt my depth perception is jacked.

Maybe that's why some pro riders don't throw their goggles into the crowd! They need em' to see :D

I had a pair of those in efforts to keep my glasses from fogging up. They didn't work very well for that, especially at hot night races here in TX. But yeah, having bad vision is a HUGE disadvantage in MX. My eyes sucked so bad I eventually couldn't wear glasses due to distortion and contacts always got dried out or dust in them, resulting in the same distortion. Impossible to NOT get arm pump when you can't see where the hell you're going! Smile

My dad wears bi focals and the last time he went riding with me he was complaining that they mess with depth perception because the magnification changes. but he has to wear them because hes just about blind without them lol.

I would think a pro would have LASIK done. They are actually guaranteeing 20/20 vision now.

this. for 3500 bucks you cure your biggest hindrance on the track. Not sure if younger kids can get it though.

Great link, thanks!!!

I wear glasses for distance. I ride without my glasses because my vision is not too far off, but i absolutely can not wear my glasses under my goggles. It is unbelievably uncomfortable!

Having a pair of prescription goggles like that will do the trick!

Well i'm no pro but I wear my contacts regularly riding. Out on the trails within about an hour my contacts dry out very very badly. I carry one of those little travel size re-wetting drop vials with me that I just slide it into my boot (the tucked in pants keeps it from falling out. ) Smile The rest of the day while either riding or resting, I can't touch my eyes in any way shape or form because they are so dried out that the contact will just go sliding up under my eye lid and hurt like a bitch. I've tried a few times to try and ride with glasses on but that is hella uncomfortable.

I'm just now starting to deal with this whole eye sight deteriation, old man thing and it sucks.

I've got astigmatism which screws with depth perception. Kinda scary when you approach a large jump and you're in the air before you expect to be. At high speed it can be like you never even hit the face of the jump, you're on the approach and the next thing you're in the air thinking WTF??

Tried riding with glasses without much luck. Contacts are next. Last I heard Lasik can not repair astigmatism. Anyone heard differently?

Of course Im no pro, but I do wear glasses, just not when I ride. When I first got glasses (age 16) the first riding experience I had with them was on my BMX bike. I didnt have any issues just rolling around with them on, but the first time I jumped with them resulted in a crash. They ended up messing with my depth perception, I landed before I expected to. So I stopped wearing them when riding right away. I never even tried them for moto. I ended up quiting riding everything around age 18, then got back into BMX at 20. Well when I did that I'd forgotten that I used to ride without glasses and rode with them on and everything was fine. I got back into moto a year after that, but still dont wear glasses for that. Just seems like too much of a hassle, and it really doesnt bother me after my eyes get adjusted, which is usually before I get my sighting lap finished.

Without my contacts on, my eyesight is so bad that I cant join the army lol. Glasses are basically coke bottles. Luckily since i started wearing contacts at a really early age, like 12, when i race they practically never bother me. Only twice have they fallen out of my eyes, once because they were the wrong fit. I find that when I wear them during the week, including all the times i ride, the less they bother me when Im racing with them. I tried the goggle lenses and literally flew off the track dozens of times in one day...i ditched those immediately and stuck to the contacts haha. If anybody has trouble with the contacts and riding i recommend dailies instead, they stay very clean (fresh pair every ride) and try wearing them all week as well as when you ride, see if that helps.
