Thats a great insight on how there fathers played such a huge role in where they are today. Very cool, thanks for reposting. I may not like the Alessi fam, but I would have given anything to have my dad take that much focus in mx for me.

Great article. I think that explains the reason RV is the way he is, where he gets his drive and never give up mentality.

http://www.racerxonline.com/2011/11/12/insight-brutal-youth Great article. What if Alessi gets the pc ride off 80's and RV and his dad start a team. Would Alessi be the man like RV is?

Isn't it interesting that rv's dad seemed like the hard ass mini dad everyone complains about but since rv "made it" you hear very little about him. I have seen many posts where people have said his dad was very tough on him but never really thought much about it because he has won a lot. The same dad whose kid doesn't succeed is an asshole.......

Whether the child makes it or not - I'm not a fan of that style of parenting. Both fathers sound like complete tools in that article.

Imagine if Team Alessi had gone with the program factory Honda had told them to do as opposed to the Alessi program. I'd bet he'd atleast have a lites title.

I LOL'd at one of the comments "Behind every great racer is a prick of a father."

My dad said "that's why you're not a successful motocross racer." HA!

"Now I just know I can’t get anymore out of him, so I just let him do his thing."-Dan Villopoto

That sentence right there is the difference in the pro careers of Mike Alessi and Ryan Villopoto. Tony Alessi's ego wouldn't (couldn't) allow him to let go and let the professionals take over when it was time. Dan Villopoto did let go, and we are seeing history in the making right before our eyes because of it.

Exactly. Nothing more to be said, villopoto can't talk until he gets on the board with Alessi in wins.

Couldn't agree more. I happened to be racing at lorettas in the pro sport class or maybe the b class back when they were on minis. I forget but it was the best mini racing I had ever seen. Ales would usually win because he'd crash RV

While I totally agree...sure seems like you're a member of the choir...? You sound jus' like a "dad"...interesting. Ya kinda remind me of a guy I was conversing with at Washougal. He flies, too. This guy had a kid that's doin' pretty good. His family used to race with friends of mine: Bill and his son, Tyler.

Small world.

Anyways, I'm proud of both of the young-men...

The dads aren't the only difference; hence, the "individuals" are a whole lot more responsible for their own out-come than people ever seem to realize.

In the end: Both of these guys have evolved into a good person.

That's enough for me.

The parenting plays the huge role in how the kid turns out. But it also depends on the kid too. Villopoto could have taken his dad's arguments and just given up. Say that his dad was too hard on him and just say he had enough. But instead he took that anger and turned it into a burning passion to win and improve as a rider. That's what made him the champion he is today. He just had what it takes mentally.. Simple as that.

Knock on Mike Alessi's dad all you like; how many of you have kids who have been factory riders and who race motocross, and makes a good living at it?

Here is how you guys see it:

Tony Alessi pushes son = Asshole

Mr. Villopoto pushes son = Good racing father who did what it took to make his son the best. Just look at how mentally strong RV is.

If Alessi was winning titles, none of you would be saying anything about Tony's program.

Great article... Alessi must constantly be wondering how he hasn't won any championships in his career. He was the next big thing.. and then RV went pro.

I think there is way too much emphasis and pressure put on schoolboy racing in America... then the guys get burnt out or think they have made it when they are 17 in a factory ride... but it is then when you need to work the hardest not when you are 12 imo.

RV's entire family was nothing but business at the track. Without their support and the constant push from all of the family he wouldn not be the great rider he is today.

Chris was the one that i would see keeping him honost even when the competition was slower.

The team Mike was on didn't cause his injuries, shit happens. You could look at a different way, Mike has done better than anyone else that had the same amount of injuries. It's amazing how he keeps coming back, kills me how a bunch of D class moto board losers can't wait to say stupid mean shit about a rider and family that is all moto.

Being all about moto dosen't make you a good or even decent person.

Villopoto is that a Portuguese name? I had a childhood friend with last name Villapouca who was Portuguese. Anyhow, some ethnic backgrounds work harder based on when they came to North America, what their families had to endure and they in-still that in their kids!! So you have Alessi, Italian, Villopoto, let's go with Portuguese for now, I'm sure their families came from humble beginnings! Look at which families value education more and are successful in College(if they get a chance to go to College), usually immigrant, usually! Just saying!

The name doesn't lie, we are all mixed lots in North America heck in the world. Names are our identifiers and for some of our pride for roots!

Guess what...you are wrong. There is nothing wrong whatsoever with either father pushing their son. That is not the issue. The issue is that one father saw when it was time to let go, let the pros take over, and let his son become his own man. The other did not, for whatever reason, and his son has payed a big price for it.

The show "The Moto: Inside The Outdoors" has documented this phenomenon quite well for all to see. It was easy to see that Mike and Danielle are starting to get quite irritated with Tony's constant haranguing. Mike Alessi is a man, not a boy. He does not need his Daddy around 24/7 telling him how to train, how to ride, how to start, how to think anymore.
