Castle Nut holding Rear Wheel Bearings

I was hoping someone could shed some light on this.

There is a "Castle Nut" that is holding the bearings and spacer in on my rear wheel set (excel wheel). Is there a special tool required to take this loose? It also looks as if they had peened it on two sides.

From my experience there is a special tool you can use but it is not really necessary. Cut a small length of steel to place in the center of the castle nut so it is making contact on the two opposing sides. Then just use a crescent wrench to turn that.

It sounds like it would damage the nut but if you take your time cutting the right sized bit of metal it will be fine.

Yea you need a special tool to remove that. Don't try to knock it loose with a punch and hammer it won't work.

Good luck with the removal, im not sure i have ever removed one without taking out the hammer and chisel!

one of the aftermarket companies, i thinks its fastway or allballs, has a rear wheel bearing kit that comes with the removal tool.

Since I work at a Machine/Fab shop I just made a quick tool. It was pretty easy to remove. What was rediculous was for 7 bearings and 2 seals was DOUBLE what I would pay for a new top end!!!!

the punch and hammer works...... not saying is the best thing to do.... but have worked for me
