I thought it was a good listen right up until about the 15th time he blamed the bike for crashing and/or not winning. Then, on the question about the outdoors, he says it's "the plan" to race them, because he has good suspension now... yeah, right. Dollars to donuts he doesn't go outdoors against the Ryans if they are both healthy.

He says he didn't sign with Suzuki because he asked them to do 1 thing and they couldn't do it.. Do you think it was the option to sit out the Nationals if he didn't feel like doing them?

Overall, it was an excellent interview. I think James is one of, if not the, most well spoken and marketable racers out there. It is too bad he feels afraid to give his views in interviews more often.

The part I have an issue with is Matthes taking thinly veiled jabs at Dungey. Maybe because I am an RD fan I see things that aren't there but it seems to me he minimizes RD's accomplishments nearly any time his name is brought up.

In fact, when asking Stewart how he thought he would match up against the sport's current greats, Steve mentioned all but Dungey as being in that group. To Stewart's credit, the first person he mentioned as a real threat was Dungey. Stew then said RV was beating Dungey in SX so he knew the pace was high.

Steve also, for the umpteenth time, minimized RD's championships in 2010. He basically inferred that they meant less because the "best guys" weren't there. Really? I thought they all had the chance to be there. Dungey must feel really bad about winning it all that year, being it was his fault the other riders got hurt, pussed out, or just couldn't ride his pace.

As mentioned above, he loves to bash Vital as "a bunch of idiots" but he continues to post here, including spamming his work to further his interests.

Generally I like Matthes interviews but to me he can't land all the riders he should because of things like I mentioned above. I doubt he'll get a serious RD, RC, Hansen etc. interview because of the way he likes to minimize what they've done.

"Also too. Anyways" = annoying

Rant over.
*Yawn*

Same old, same old. Some people you just can't make happy. There weren't enough words in the dictionary for me to talk about how great RD was in 2010. He was amazing but the question remains- how would he have done if JS and CR were there? Like it or not, it's there. Reed's got to deal with the same thing- his two titles indoors came w first RC & then JS hurt. Although I think those questions were made a little quieter with his rides this year.

Sorry for letting you down. And there are plenty of other media people that RC and Hanny will talk to so that you can get your info from them.

People will answer this according to how they feel about Stewart. Until someone tells facts, it's all speculation. It could as easily be that there be a three-year commitment, or a particular component used, or someone added to the team. People who don't like Stewart or his choices (or do like them) will fill in the blank in a way that confirms what they already feel about him.

Steve doesn't dislike Dungey! He is a journalist and is doing his job. Everyone out there probably even Dungey realize that Dungey didn't beat RV,CR, and JS in 2010. Steve Matthes isn't the one who put the * on Dungeys championships the fans did. All Steve does is refer to it. Reed did get bashed for the same shit!

Its ok to be an upset Dungey fan. Please just don't take it out on the journalist. Maybe you and Tits can have a little memorial session with a shrine of Dungey on Suzuki's.

Steve it does suck they won't talk to you. Its their loss though cause I don't think anyone else does the candid interviews you do. Much respect to you bud! Keep up the great work.

Ya know, I didn't look at it that way, but your spot on. Kudos.

I've said my fair share of shit about the guy, but it's only because I love seeing him out there so much. He's made mistakes for sure, but who ain't? I can't even imagine the pressure that's on his shoulders. And the dude is a year younger than me..! I hope he comes out swinging next season and we have another amazing year. Roll on A1 Smile

Dungey didnt beat RV in 2010? Could have sworn he had the points lead with a few races left when Villo crashed out. Oh yeah that must not count.

I think that is certainly a factor. In all fairness to Stewart, the guy has not had a decent suspension for a long time. The first thing I do to a new bike is send the suspension up the road to JGR and let Tim Schutt and the boys work their magic. It not only makes riding the bike more enjoyable, but it also makes it safer. I would not want to commit to being brutalized physically than I already would be for the entire summer; which is exactly what a bad suspension would do.

I think a more notable factor is the unrest at Suzuki. If I were a rider being recruited by Suzuki the caliber of Stewart (if it were me as the caliber of rider that I am my only question would be "Where do I sign?"), I would want to know that the team intended on being around beyond 2012. Stewart wanted a three year deal. Suzuki would not give DeCoster a contract that long following the 2010 season, and they probably felt the same this year.

After my conversations with Stewart, I believe the determining factor was the JGR team itself. They have a tremendous facility, they are the only team with their own private fully irrigated tracks, and the have incredible personnel from top to bottom.

Did RV, CR, and Js race the entire season? The answer is no! Dungey won the championship by staying healthy. Thats part of winning a championship though. Credit to him for his accomplishment. He just didn't beat those guys at every round to do it. That is why people put an * by it. I can see their point. IF RV doesn't get hurt at that race and stays healthy for outdoors as well the championships could have went to him. You know what they say about IF's if my aunt had a d!@# she would be my uncle.

Despite what Matthes or the rest of the industry may say about this place, it seems to me, in the short time I've been on here, that these forums are a clear step above RacerX's site, as far as rational conversation is concerned.

It feels like a perpetual hate machine over there, most of it aimed at James Stewart. He has his flaws, of course, probably more than most riders, but the negativity of the comments on Racer X is truly off the charts. The term "stewtard" is thrown around constantly if you say anything in support of him, and comment sections under the articles in which he's mentioned frequently devolve into one-sided rants about Barack Obama and affirmative action and how James supposedly doesn't have the mental capacity to race at the pace he does without endangering everyone on the track.

It's pretty fucking stupid.

This place seems to be at least 50/50 on the guy, if not more positive, which is awesome. There seems to be a respect here for the opinions of others (and for the accomplishments of multi-title winning riders) that maybe doesn't exist on some of the other sites. Or am I catching a positive vibe from this place that doesn't normally exist? Maybe the general opinion on James Stewart is on the upswing lately, not just here.

From the sounds of it they just couldn't get it dialed. He hired Sergio/Ferry to fix the problem. What else did you want him to do? Sounds to me like he put in quite the effort. He said it himself he had a small toolbox(limited resources). JGR has a way bigger toolbox. He was doing the only thing he could this year find a different ride.

I was very surprised to hear that Ferry rode the bike once and didn't want to ride it again. My cousin has that bike and loves it, but maybe at that elite level it's different.

DrSweden,

My source is the JGR team. I speak with the guy that negotiates all the contracts for the team 4-5 times a week. I was at the press conference and talked to James at length about the upcoming season. There is an 'out' clause of sorts, but the expectation of the team is to ride both series. The 'out' clause is also tied to the NASCAR thing, making it very much in his best interests to ride outdoors. The option kicks in should he win a championship - which is the overall goal.

Check out the show some time! You will enjoy it!

Cool, I will check out the show. Tnx for getting back with the details! Awesome news by the way, only importance for me is good racing, and based on your info, seems like it's going to happen, and no need for me to worry anymore!Cheerful

Damn hard to be pessimistic at this point!Cool

Dr, have you seen the JGR setup? Its amazing! They have things even the factory teams dont have, and if they need or want something, they can make it! There was a vid floating around last year or two years ago showing the MX teams setup, and what they have available thru the nascar shop. They, quite literally, can make anything. Not buy it and bolt it on, make it.

They have a suspension dyno. They can take telemetry of a lap on their SX track, download it in, and mimic the shock or fork movement and look at the spikes. Then tweak something, and run it again and see what changed! They made their own shock! Need a different case cover? Run over and make it! Want offset races? Just go make them, fast.

Now, that being said, think about this. The YZF, in the hands of a top level pro guy, alot of things come to the surface that none of us will very likely never see. Who has done more R&D on that bike than anyone? JGR. Not talking about testing, R&D. They have done more than YMC USA. Engine, tranny, chassis, suspension, the works. If anyone can develope and move that bike, any bike, its JGR. The 09 honda started out as a roach, by 2011 its the best on the track. Same chassis, just figuring out things. Well, Yam is going thru the same thing.

To quote Josh Hill from 09.... "the bike is super responsive to the smallest change. Other bikes you can move something 2mm and kind of feel a difference, on that bike, you can moving something half a mm and its a BIG difference"

Plus remember, when your winning, you love your bike. When you are struggling, its always the bike. Regardless of the riders mindset, or his personal life, or his efforts- all of that can goto chaos and the cause of a bad year will always be the bike. Look at Dungey. Hes on the exact same bike this year as last year. This year, the bike is subpar. Last year, its the best thing since sliced bread. Last year, the bike would carve a pumkin, this year it wont turn. Last year he was on a roll and winning, this year it was a struggle, and just plain bad luck, and its the bike. Same for JS. Last year, everything went to chaos. His personal life was different, his team had internal issues, he struggled, of course it was the bikes fault.
I gotta say, being able to make parts isn't some sort of secret ingredient that means success. As if none of the factory race shops have a machine shop at their beck and call? JGR is an impressive outfit and I am sure they are top notch in what they do. However, that in no way guarantees that they can figure out a setup that will allow Stewart to do what he expects to do on the bike. What he expects to do is ride his fastest and pull away from everyone and demoralize them. That hasn't happened since May of 2009. Wow, has it been that long?

Here's what I'll point out again. Stewart had no problem handling his competition in years where he was head and shoulders above it. In years where he was pushed he was on his head WAY too much. Even in 2009, the title was still in question at the last round when he could have had it wrapped up with at least 2 rounds left. Didn't matter if it was a Yamaha or a Kawasaki, all that mattered was if he was pushed. Shit, he even lost a title he had in hand when he hurt his knee with zero pressure in the 2007 Nationals (after RC was done with his retirement string of wins).

Now let's think about Dungey. In 2010 he loved the Suzuki and dominated and in 2011 it is said he had all kinds of "setup" issues. Did he? Or is it that he was forced to try to run a new pace? Suddenly the awesome 2010 settings are no good? No, he had to leave his comfort zone. Leaving the comfort zone has a way of making a bike feel like shit. It isn't about which bike it is or if the setup is right. It's about having to ride beyond your own personal pace to keep up. Logically speaking, when you leave your comfort zone, you become uncomfortable. It's pretty simple. Reed became uncomfortable after his Millville crash. His setup didn't change, his comfort level did. JGR will have an awesome bike for James to race on this year, it's up to him to make it win.

Actually, it is just this sort of thing as talked about in the preceding post. Why mention anything about a potential deal with Suzuki if only to not reveal the details of what is being said? There was one thing they wouldn't do.......and it was?????? My opinion is James likes the drama and having people filling in the blanks because he certainly provides enough blanks to try to fill. How he ever said that Larry Brooks is "visiting family" with a straight face is incredible. Does no one feel completely disrespected by a guy that is going to treat you as if you're that stupid? By this I mean the media, not fans. If I was Matthes I'd want to press him on it......but then you get no Podcast of course. I'll just assume that the issue was the No Nationals clause as 1-forty-8 wondered since there are blanks left wide open.

I've gotta agree with you.

Despite some of the few idiots on here at VitalMX, it is far better than some of the one-hit, ridiculous comments found on RacerX and TransworldMX. As a whole, people on Vital have a history and there is usually someone (Guyb and the other moderators) that can clip outrageous and unfounded claims by the people that post.

I think it works just fine.

I think you've got the whole "set-up" thing right. Not only is proper set-up of the bike important, but it is equally important that the guy has to believe in their set-up. They have to be mentally excited about their bike and their team. If they have both, they are unstoppable.

In all fairness to Kyb, Yamaha and Sergio,What a load of shit...Stewart hasn't had a decent suspension in a long time. give me a fucking break.
Those guys at factory Yamaha and Kyb and Sergio who BTW was with him when he went 24-0 at Kawasaki know how to set up a suspension. That suspension sure work well for him in the 5 races he won last year and the SX title in 2009 didn't it...
Keep working you'll come up with more excuses you can use for him.
You might want to get out from under JGR's skirt and look around, because your bias is showing.
It seems you think they are the only team with private tracks and incredible personal.
Hell most of the top 10 have private tracks of their own.

Bigcat - they are the only team with a private track. Many top riders build tracks at their homes or elsewhere. Teams have arrangements with independent tracks to close the facility to the public so that they can practice there.

I'm not making excuses for anyone. Setting up a suspension for SX is totally different than setting up a suspension for the outdoors. That is also a fact.

If seeing where the sport is going and acknowledging that a team has a unique vision means I am 'up their skirt' then so be it. I can accept that. Your approval - or lack thereof - does not affect the amount of sleep I get at night. But I am glad to see that you are passionate about motocross. It is that passion that drives the sport forward and reminds me that we love the greatest sport on the planet.
