Tips for setting up a race van?

Over on Thumpertalk in the Trucks and vehicle forum there is a ton of info and pics. Theres soem good stuff there.

The thing that sucks about using a van like that is that there are so many windows to break in through.

Very sweet set up with room for 2 bikes (have fit 3), toolbox, sleeper compartment, custom cabinets and storage areas.

This is what we always did with our stretched vans.
The cheap fast and easy way....

Black out all the windows in the rear,so people cant tell what is in there ,do not put decals on the van(will help with theft).
Half inch plywood wall with carpet behind the front bench seat (bolt it in with brackets of some sort ,just in case you want to ever remove it).
Put locking type hooks on the wall to hang stuff,etc....

Carpet the rear of the van to match the wall and then get a big clear plastic office-mat and put it on top the carpet where the bikes will sit (easy to take out and hose off).You can also take the mat out at the races to set your bike on it.Then lay an air mattress type blowup bed in back to sleep on (the carpet wont make it so cold in there).

Also, get a car alarm...

Are there any other firms out there that you folks know of that set up vans or offer equipment to use like Race Rigs? Back in the old box van days, there were a number of shops out there.

I got a 96 e350 15psg van when i was 16 to go race sx out of. We pulled the seats out, put up a wall behind where the first bench seat was, and cut a rubber mat to fit behind the wall on the floor where the bikes would go. We carpeted the wall and sealed it off so not to get any gas smell. I didnt have the money to tint the windows dark so I used black house paint and painted the windows in the back so you couldnt see in. We mounted some shelving against the back door for oils, but left the rest alone. I always was driving with another racer so I didnt put much back there to get in the way of loading bikes. The cool part was there was enough room between the drivers seat and the wall that a twin mattress would fit, giving a place to sleep while the other person drove. We mounted a couple amps on the wall and a box with 2 12' subs, hung some fuzzy dice, and went to Mexico with 3 bikes, a big tool box, race gas, gear and parts for 2 racers, and 20 gal of drinking water. I used that van through 8 seasons of supercross and outdoors, 1 year of Canadian nationals, 2 Arenacross seasons, and probably a 1000 local races. I sold it in 07 to some mexicans in Sarasota, fl who owned a roofing business. It had 400,000 miles on it, still with the original motor, but on its second tranny.

Too many windows.

Limo tint on windows with zero stickers. Might want to put a thin layer of thin 1/8th plywood over wall/windows. I had someone try to steal my bike from the back of my van by simply using a razor blade to cut the rubber stripping and gently set the window on the ground. I was lucky that they could not figure out how to reach threw the window and open the door and they were talking and my dad herd them.

Get a Good alarm.

I use to sleep in a Ford Van with the bike in the back. Whats the problem?

def paint the windows

You dont have to paint or tint the side windows. Go to a sticker shop and buy enough black vinyl to completely cover them. From the outside it just looks like there are tinted dark as heck.

The all time best thing I have ever found for Vans and trailers is Pegboard. You can get it in prefinished colors at some big home stores. Next step is to get on Ebay and find a large roll of elastic cord to fit the holes. Start lacing the elastic cord through the holes in any configuration you want. (Think Snap-on tool trucks ect) You are then able to store thing up and put of the way with no fear of it falling. Just make sure that the pegboard is attached well and you are good to go.

A buddy of mine added what I thought was a cool feater to the rear door. It was a table hinged to the door that you could fold down with a set of legs for the oposite end and could be used as a work table, pick nick table, etc. It was a light weight aluminum table. Just a thought. He had the doors that folded all the way to the side of the van, so the table never interfered with loading/unloading.

That thing is bad ass.
