Plans to expand Alabama's Barber Motorsports ParkMay 7, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — George Barber said he plans to nearly double the size of his motorcycle museum and add a motocross track at Barber Motorsports Park, which was built with $70 million of his own money, according to the Birmingham News.

Barber, a dairy and real estate millionaire, said ground likely will be broken next year on an expansion that would add at least 9,000 square metres to the museum and enable the display of hundreds more motorcycles. The existing 13,000-square-metre museum allows for the display of less than half of Barber's 1,200-bike collection, widely regarded as the world's best.

The Barber park and museum, in its sixth year of operation, has been a tourism magnet for the Birmingham metropolitan area. A study by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitor's Bureau estimated its economic impact at $372 million since its opening.

If this goes through to completion, and I believe it will, it will be one of - if not - THE best MX facility in the WORLD. Anyone that has been to Barber's motorsports park knows what's coming. I expect they will be kinda like the national track at Unadilla though. No one rides it except on National Weekend. (and GP weekend, of course................plus MXdN weekend now and again)

Have you seen it? I thought they would be racing there by now.
Birmingham would be a great location for a SE Nat. Lots of easy access there from most anywhere in the S.E.

I hope it is hilly. The mx world doesn't need another flat jump filled SX type track like Freestone.That is a awesome location though.

I heard bremen is still getting permits finalized.. if they land a national they will only have a mx and sx track, if they don't get a nat then they'll also add a gp & pit bike track.
