As Carlos already posted in this thread...I think your twisting things a bit as most folks here weren't "insulting" team USA riders for not signing stuff at the race but rather questioning a system/promoter that would shuffle riders off to an exclusive "industry" party AFTER the race that the vast majority of fans would not have any hope of having access to.

Calling them out for being serious and focused on race day is really kind of strange to me, especially since they did sign autographs, but the original poster just wasn't there at the time to get the attention he hoped for. The Americans pay their own way over, there is no prize money, and the race is not on TV in America, yet they still come and give it their all, yet it's still not enough...
So the riders actually pay their own way? No way, not going to belive that one.
Do the riders really make no money on the race. I always thought it was written into contracts that if selected to go the des Nations, riders got a bonus, and depending on finish, got a bigger a smaller bonus?
The riders who went, are not the most out going with the fans here in the states. Both Ryans are, from my experiences, kinda of secluded on race days. Certain riders will walk around the pits and mingle, the Ryans are not that type of rider, maybe that is what makes them so good? They are 100% focused all day long. Expecting them to be someone they are not, especially over seas, is asking alot. Would of been cool to hear at least one story of one of the Americans doing something cool for the fans over there though. No, not giving away jerseys, goggles, bike parts or anything like that, just maybe going out of there way to say hi and take a pic. RC was never one to be a "man of the people," and lets face it, the Ryans have both learned a lil something from RC.
I really don't think the fans are that hateful and disrespectful of the riders themselves, I think it has more to do with how the fans in the states gloat about the riders. Remember when Lenny was here and JBS could do no wrong, even if he was wrong? That kind of fandom turns people off. When people are that pumped to pimp out a certain rider, it's going to make people find shit to bitch about.
I'm not a big fan of either Ryan, that doesn't mean I don't have mucho respect for the both of them and what they both accomplished thus far into their careers. I do get a little irratated when the fans of those two guys start in with the "Boss" and the "second coming of the GOAT." Comparisons happen in all sports, everyone is looking for the next MJ, or Montana, its part of sports, just the mx guys seem to get a little miopic about it..
Congrats to Team U.S.A. on a race I don't care about. I would like to see Alessi go one of theses days though..

I think that is part of the problem. They win too much, seems too easy.
To me the race is outdated, they need to change how it all works. I say the U.S. against everyone else. One year we get to host, next year they host. Maybe if we lost one I'd gain some interest. How boring would it be if the Yankees won the World Series every year?
US host one year....rest of the world host the next...and back and forth. I think it would be great.
How cool would it be to see Villopoto, Dungey, Stewart, Canard, Barcia, Alessi, Short, Millsaps, Tomac, and Grant all on one team taking on the world?
no baseball, NFL, NBA, musicians or movie stars are expected to do this before or after the events so why do you guys feel entitled?
furthermore, some of the big actors won't even let you take a pic of them, but you'll still run to watch the movie they have in the theater.

Waiting in line for James' autograph made me just miss the cut-off time to get Ryan's autograph; however, a quick pleading of my case (I was getting all three autographs - on jerseys - for a young rider in Australia) and Ryan happily acquiesced. Top bloke, that Ryan. Anyway, I was now well and truly late for Chad's autograph but, again, after some more finagling, Mr Reed did the deed.
In short, I was impressed with how approachable, and how obliging, Messrs Stewart, Villopoto and Reed were on the day.
How dare you, sir.
Especially if they're playing tennis at the same time.
I didn't realise "fans" went to watch the mxdn to get some autographs and freebies. They're obviously going for the wrong reasons.
