Cam,

Can you explain the shoulder cup clearance deal again, regarding it could cause injury if not worn properly? Where did you get that info?

I wear mine with that back part tucked in and the front part OUT on my Thor chest/back protector. I have clearance in the neck area and haven't had to make one adjustment to the Leatt or the Thor protector.

Some people have commented to tuck the front in. But it doesn't bother me as is and I already crash tested it in my last race with no ill effects, other than slightly dazed.
I wore the THICK EVS doughnut and had no problems with that either so the Leatt is cake. I figure the less movement the better in a crash, hence wearing the FRONT out.

thx,
G

Anyway Cam, here is how I wear mine with no problems.

I was thinking about this last night when I was on a long drive. Since the Leatt Brace frenzy a year ago I have seen at least a dozen first person reports of people who feel they can walk today because of their brace. Lets say 50% of the riding public wears them, does this mean that 12 people who don't wear them but post on this board have been paralyzed in the last year? And had those braces not existed there would be 24 this year? If people feel it saved them then great but I'm not convinced.

I've been wearing a donut mounted to my chest protector for at least a dozen years and always felt I was doing the best thing I could to protect myself. I hadn't been riding the last year and suddenly felt that I had to have a Leatt before I started riding again. I know longer feel that. On the Hans device it stops the drivers head snapping farther than the device, however in the car the weight behind that snap is 10 or so pounds times whatever the G force is(helmet and head). I believe 1G doubles the weight and 10Gs is times making a 10 G crash 100 lbs. On the normal MX headplant there's body weight of well into the 200s based on some of this board plus the G multiplier and sometimes a 220 lb bike on top of that. After thinking about it I'm not convinced a instant stop is the answer, until someone can prove that an instant stop is the better way I'm sticking with my donut which I know from experience compresses at a much slower rate than instant. But damn, now I can't spend $60 for bitchin stickers.

What a few people are doing is forcing their shoulder cups into the small gap that exists between the upper part of the brace where the pin clip is and the tab that rests on your collar bones. If you wedge the shoulder cups of the CP into that space, you'll create a fixed cantilever off the sides of the brace that could potentially harm you if you fell on your side.

As far as not tucking the front of the Leatt into your CP, I wouldn't recommend that either. The Leatt is designed to bear directly on the sternum and most chest protectors are designed so that the plastic chest plate is actually elevated/suspended 10-20mm off the chest. Also, it appears in you pic that only part of the Leatt's sternum plate is actually resting on your CP. The other half looks to be above the top of the CP's chest plate, not bearing on anything.

BMW is an investor or part-owner, so I am not sure you could call it independent testing.

But it's testing, nonetheless. The Germans are pretty straight forward folks, from my experience.

Thanks, now I understand & do not do that in the first paragraph.

I guess I need to call Leatt to further understand my reasoning on the less movement is better theory. I can understand how some riders would not like it, but it doesn't bother me at all, like it's not even there. Also I already did my crash test dummy routine....

Thanks Cam.

You take an emotionally charged debate about spinal cord injuries and throw a product at it. Everyone will buy them up. There is a need for spinal protection but I don't buy that all these people are being "saved" by the Leatt, or any other brace. As for the people thinking they were saved, what would have happened had they not been wearing it? Really?

What is the number of spinal injuries annually for the last 10 years related to moto? Are there more injuries now than there used to be? Really? Or is it that we all get info faster and more easily and hear about more stuff?

BMW did a study on the Leatt? Related to street bikes or dirt? Two totally different types of crashing. I don't think anything can compare to taking a digger into a whoop section or into the face of a jump.

How many young kids read this?

I wear one. I broke three vertebras in my neck once and i rather have a hurt shoulder than end up in a wheel chair............

I think we have heard a LOT of stories in these forums that talk about how glad they wear to wear one.Wink

www.transworldmx.com by Ivan Tedesco

Is there any particular reason why you stopped wearing the Leatt Brace?

I never felt comfortable wearing it. A lot of guys were hurting their shoulders because of the brace… There was nothing proven that shows it actually works, you know? I think you either believe in it and you wear it, or you don't believe in it and you don't wear it.

Let him break his neck like I did and he will wear one every time he gets back on the bike even to ride a warm up lap...

And lets face it, most pros are dumb ass's.

A local pro face planted into the third jump of a rythm section of my home track a few weeks ago. I was there. He landed head first into the face of a jump similar to what's been described of Fonseca's crash. He still sustained multiple fractures to the cervical spine but his orthopedic surgeons were convinced that his injuries would have left him a quadriplegic or dead had he not been wearing the Leatt brace. As it is is, he had successful surgery to stabilize the fractured vertebrae and he should make a full recovery.

I would believe a team of orthopedic surgeons would know more about that than your typical racer kid that thinks he's bullet proof.

Joeys was just shipped back to leatt for testing. Let's hope that will help answer so many questions. What I need to post is a pic of his jersey from that day. You can plainly see the marks from where he landed in relation to the leatt. It is anyones right to chose or not to chose to wear one, but remember its better to be safe than sorry!!! Its worth the price not to ever know if it really was the Leatt that saved my son.....oh and his new one came last week !!!

Yeah, that's a good example of the brace working... or maybe it's like when they took that "dead" person of the ventilator and she woke up. How many other people where "miraculously" healed when medical science didn't have an answer.

But that is still in no way proof that the brace worked. How many other riders have broken stuff up and still not be paralyzed? I know more people that have had broken necks than are paralyzed because of it.

People have a tendency of looking at a situation and thinking, well this didn't happen because of this. Coincidence, or the "if he had hit that fence post just an inch to the right, he wouldn't have walked away" type thing. We have heard these stories a hundred times.

I am very happy your buddy is going to make a full recovery. I'm just saying that we all shouldn't run out and buy neck braces just because they are the only option now. With that said, I am really playing devil's advocate here. I would wear one.

I think alot of you have forgotten how important physical conditioning is to prevent injury. I can tell you from experience that a rider that is strong and in great shape can take a crash 10 times better than a rider whos out of shape. There might be more injurys because riders are not in good physical condition , this includes neck injury.

The concept of providing an alternative load path around the cervical spine makes complete sense to me. I won't ride without a Leatt or some future derivative of the Leatt.

If Ivan wore one maybe he would have enough confidence not to suck so bad. Windham started to wear one full time and had his best year ever because he was so confident. Confidence is key just ask my mentor Billy Mays.
your comment makes no sense Unsure he's NOT comfortable wearing it so according to your statement if he wore it ,it WOULD make him slower??? he's more confident WITHOUT it so he doesnt wear it.... i agree its the right answer for IT and todder you dont get a factory ride because you suck...

These Leatt threads usually go 6 pages (Yawn smiley). I wear a 661 roost deflector and it fits perfect with the Leatt . I also tuck in both the rear first and the front second. I also wear it without the straps or 661 roost deflector if I am not riding in traffic . I would rather be a paraplegic the a quadriplegic.
