People that have lived in the western areas of the country have their disasters too, wildfires, drought, earthquakes and such. Some are unpredictable, some are long term. But from the comments here, it seems a lot of western area people make light of this, not knowing the how big a problem this storm can cause. Cities in it's path are already shutting down and declaring disaster ares before it even gets there. Best thing that can happen is nothing, but it doesn't look like that will happen. All the airports on the northeast coast are closed. For at least a couple days, nothing is happening as far as flying, and after noon tomorrow in NYC, if you want to go anywhere, you're walking. It may be mud at Southwick instead of the usual sand. But anyone that attends, get out fast. Hopefully you are driving and heading west.

I live near I-80 in Pa and saw 30 to 40 Penn Power trucks heading east; That was just one convoy that went by when I happened to be looking. Who knows how many more there were.

I live about 225 miles north of the gulf on the ga/al line (right about columbus ga) and in oct 95 Opal hit land at about a mid grade cat 3 (was a 5 but slowed before landfall) and it caused massive damage in our area. Hell I was out of power for a week. So don't be so sure about it subsiding as soon as it makes land fall.

Well, now it's made landfall this morning In North Carolina as an 85 mph Cat 1. By tomorrow it's forecast to drop to a Tropical Storm. The winds in New York are supposed to reach Tropical Storm force Sunday morning, New England Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.

In my area hurricanes are a way of life..this one will cause major damage along the coast frome GA. north..mainly the carolinas...but, like the one dude said it will cause alot of flood damage and power outages all along the east coast. But unless it bounces back out over the warm water and regroups,(highly unlikely) it will continue to lose strength...the race will be fine. i didnt realize i was logging into a weather channel/ political forum. does anyone remember we're racin today!
