The SX350F is a motocross bike specifically made for the track. If someone wants a bike for the desert or the trails the chances are they'll probably choose to buy a KTM EXC... presuming they don't own one already.

Give me one example of KTM 'trying to force feed that bike to the masses'. You've stated previously that you dislike KTM machines, which makes your opinion somewhat biased don't you think? You don't like KTMs, therefore you're keen to shoot them down.

But the average rider may include trail riding. But even for motocross, a pro rider, why would he want 100cc less power when most pros (at a local level) I know replace exhaust and do head work and other mods to give the bike MORE power? Also from a reliability standpoint a motor with more cc's does not have to have as radical tuning as a smaller engine trying to achieve simliar performance and yes we watch Short and Alesis both bike blow up.

I don't like KTMs, but that doesn't change the fact the bike is down on power especially at altitude and the fact Andrew cannot pull holeshots like he did with a 450, and that Alesi is running a 450 and when I was shooting a Thundervalley, Andrews bike sounded like it was struggling.

I am not shooting down KTM. I am shooting down the idea that in competition a motor with 1/4th the displacement is better.

I would say that a 250 cc bike with a lot less weight could be better in some situations but the KTM seems like an ill conceived idea. You don't think KTM is pushing the 350? LOL.
Please explain exactly what "100cc less power" is? Do you have a fixed amount of power per CC?

I'd really like it if you could do it showing the math of: Crank HP, RPM of Peak HP & Primary Gear Reduction. Your statement makes it clear you've haven't done it, the results might suprise you.

As soon as I'm done with measuring Cairoli's bore and stroke for you I'll get a hold of Short's bike Wink

There is an old saying, there is no replacement for cubic inches. I agree with that statement. Sure two engines can have the same displacement, one tuned mild which puts less stress on then parts and one that is tuned for more HP which puts greater stress on the engine thus making in more unreliable and or decreasing time between maintenance cycles. Manufacturers

I don't know the crank HP RPM or gearing, but both Caroli and Shorts bikes struggled at the Lakewood track. Why, because the bike has less HP and why is that? Because it has less hp or torque or both..

It takes a certain type of rider to make the 350 work,Short doesn't look suited to it at all,but on any bike he'd be running with the rest of those outside the top 3 that are making the numbers up each week. For example Lommel is probably the toughest track in Motocross, its so deep that it can suck the life out of any bike,Cairoli won convincingly there,(Desalle had made good recovery from his injury too and looked back to form)

The 350's biggest advantage over the 450 is that it had less inertia,it's easier to maintain momentum as the engine braking is less,it doesn't matter if its not much lighter that the 450 because it feels lighter to ride, but mostly when its on song,Cairoli was skipping across that Lommel sand and flicking the bike around and able to keep at it for 35+2 but the 450,being more of an animal looked like it took more out of a lot of guys, you have more engine braking into a turn, then a bigger burst of lose to hang onto on the exit.Herlings (and AC) riding style is a great example of how to make a bike with less power go faster than one with more, (RV's MXdN ride too)

It'd need a top 3 rider to ride the 350,or any KTM for that matter in the AMA to see how good they are,,if someone fast like Cairoli turned up at Southwick he'd probably go 1-1,the deeper it was,the more more chance of a win

I don't see KTM forcing anything on anyone, although some people seem even slightly threatened by the Euro machine, which is kinda sad really, especially as it looks like they'll have bona-fida top riders in both classes next year,as jamma says,if you don't like them, don't buy them, however,I'm willing to bet sales will go up next year

good post, I agree
Indeed, and WORCSRacer also ando make good points,Cairoli and Villopoto were amazing on the 250s with a similar style, agressive, full on,and both are lightweights, they work the bike and are ideal 350 pilots
Dungey and Desalle on the other hand seem to prefer Horsepower, they're smooth, sit down more and use more throttle control,Short isn't too dissimilar,I doubt Dungey would go with the 350 but no doubt he'd be fast on it,just not as fast as someone like RV
This season now has RV,Reed and now Barcia also up front with Dungey, last year Metty was pretty close at times but he's now in the group that's chasing them, along with Breyton,Milsaps etc and that's right where Short is too, even with a holeshot or on a 450,great rider that he is,he's always going to end up in that 5-10 area, does anyone think otherwise?

There are very few riders anywhere that can ride a virtually standard 450 flat out for 30 or 35 mins + 2 laps yet guys shove on pipes, throw money at the motor, etc, the 350 has easily enough power for the vast majority, let alone with a few mods, the 350 is easier to ride too,it's laws of physics

Anyone care to remember the 2 stroke hybrid? A CR250 with a 500cc motor shoved in it,why didn't that work, with a massive 250cc advantage in displacement? It pretty much proves a point that a motor with only 1/2 the displacement can be better(500cc =Extinct,) and people here are bleating on about giving up 100ccsLaughing Laughing

Com'on man you know that's not true, just go out to any local track and see for yourself all the dudes who have to modify and put after market pipes on those 450's just to get enough HP to match their riding abilities....Grinning

Pipes are also used to smooth out the power delivery and make the bike easier to ride.

First of all it was a joke. Secondly, do you really think that MOST dudes at the local track are buying the stuff to "smooth out the power"?

More often or not, they think they need more power to make them faster, rather than working on technique or spending the money on better suspension.

This one is actually pretty easy. Assuming the top speed of the 350 & 450's is similar, Crank HP @ Peak RPM are readily available for all the bikes. Takes about 1 minute to do the math & find an estimated % of greater gear reduction for the 350. The rest is just ratios on how the manufacturers space the gearing.

I am sure that a lot of people do it for the looks more than anything, but it keeps the aftermarket pipe company's in business.

I was just making the point that a pipe on a 450 isn't always about making more power.
