I've been at the RC car thing for about 15 years now and I've had one Traxxas. Spend the money the first time. I would suggest Associated, Ofna, Jammin, Losi, HPI, Durango, and the list goes on for short course trucks that are better than the Traxxas.
JLong wrote:
Yeah, and better have a box full of parts for those too... if you can find the parts.
Have you had them all? If you have, then you know they are much better than a Traxxas. I've had my OFNA Hyper 10 for over a year. It has seen many hard hits and many days at the track and even some spirited bashing all while only bending a hinge pin. One bent hinge pin! Anybody who is into RC knows you will break stuff, but some much less than others. Also, those brands are amongst the most popular in RC today so if you have a problem finding parts then there must not be any good hobby shops around.

I wouldnt trade my Losi 8ight t 2.0 for all the traxxas you could stack in my yard. Buy a Losi and never look back.

I have gotten into RC Truck racing and bought Traxxas / HPI / Losi / Team Associated . I have 2 4x4 slashs abd the 1st thing I did was install the RPM arms and a fan .. I have built a pretty rough RC track that is outdoor mx style and haven't broken anything .. I love the Traxxas 4x4 .

Never heard that quote, I like it! I'm just saying, they all break. I have had 3-5 Losi's, 3 associated and 2 traxxass. I wouldn't use a traxxass to race, but they are great for bashing. The traxxass ones I don't think I have broken, but I haven't clipped a wall with one either. I use the Traxxass in the snow and mud.

All of the brands will break at some point in time as all have their positives and negatives. Shopping for parts is similar to moto, your hobby shop doesn't carry much, but needs your business to stay afloat, and will order it. Online sites will have the most selection and be at your door, for less money, within a few days. West coast people use amainhobbies, 1-3 days at your door. Carolinas RC was good for east coast, but I believe they were bought out by a-main, not sure on shippping east. Use the monthly coupon codes from a main, they usually amount to 10% off or more depending on your order. Now, what kind of driving you do depends on the brand/car you buy. Back yard bashers usually get Traxxas, you fit this description. Dedicated racers are looking to Losi, AE(Associated), Kyosho, Mugen and a few smaler names. My advice...

Short Course 2wd AE, Losi, Kyosho, Traxxas 4wd, Same and Durango
2wd Buggy 10th Scale Losi, AE, Kyosho,
4wd Buggy AE, Losi are top 2, Kyosho and Durango
8th Scale Nitro Buggy Kyosho, Mugen, Losi, AE, Durango
8th Scale Nitro Truggy AE, Losi, Mugen, Kyosho
Electronics Airtronics, Futaba, KoPropo, Spectrum(Controllers)
Batteries Reedy, Orion, ProTek, Thunder Power
Speed Controls/Motors LRP, Tekin, Novak, Orion, Mamba
Off Road Tires Pro Line, AKA, J Concepts

If you get into multiple vehicles, there is a lot of crossover(parts/tools) between them within the same brand, helps on savings. I have all AE, and them and Losi offer them most diverse selection. Both of them make cars/trucks from 18th scale to 8th scale, on road to off road where Mugen for example only have 8th scale nitro off road and on road, but Mugen is the choice of many right now for nitro, so don't sell yourself on just one brand if you want the best in all classes. Nothing wrong with your Traxxas, especially for bashing, like any brand, buy spare parts, use your manual and part numbers and load up on misc screw, nuts, bolts and breakable items like arms.

Kyosho is the highest price point in the industry. Most hobby shops have a lot of AE or Losi, they are the 2 big names. Finally, Lipo/brushless with electric, don't waste your money on NiCad, it's like VHS. RC tech.net is a great online forum, its the Vital of RC. There are plent of used items for sale and a lot of good sellers, plus plenty of topics for things like this or more specific questions. Neobuggy.net has lots of updates on racing and products and Live Rc covers races live on the internet along with news. Hope this helps.

I would have to agree with most above except that Durango doesn't make a 2wd short course or 2wd buggy.

Quoted for truth. RPM makes some damn good stuff and everything has a no questions asked warrentee. Probably costs about the same as the stock stuff too

I have a Nitro slayer, 3 nitro rustlers and a nitro 4tec and they are all bullet proof fill it with nitro and go . I have had all the RC10s and losi racers and all of them break and would nickel and dime you to death at the race track. The nice thing about Traxxas is they are great for just bashing and having fun but you can break anything if you try hard enough.

Losi's 2.0 truggy n buggy are the best all around rc there is, equipped with a b5 pro n a m11x radio and you have quality, I raced open truggy n buggy class in silverstate after I broke my foot just to keep the racing spirit n won by almost a lap in truck, I beleive the main is on YouTube, just type in Jeff alessi rc n u will see the sickest video of me driving that thing hard, losi 8th scale program is unbelievable and their new tlr program has some pretty crazy stuff for team drivers to get, I couldn't beleive all the titanium tricked out parts I was sent, I actually can relate so much of my moto skills to the rc n it feels like riding, so it's not so depressing when I'm hurt n not able to ride. Kevin Gahan is the man for letting me run their stuff.

Last car I ever bought for R/C racing about 12 years ago was this Losi XXX. Mostly has all graphite, titanium and aluminum back plate plus some screws. Had some good crashes with this but never drove into something solid like a wall or tree, you can break any R/C car hitting something solid at the right angle.

This car has the best name ever though "XXX", Charlie Sheen would be "winning" with this car for sure Tongue

It's all about physics. You can drop these cars from 10 feet in the air, and if they land pretty close to where the wheels and suspention can soak it up, they are fine. Same drop head first onto one wheel, the A -arm is going to break. These cars are way to fast nowadays to think they are indestructable.

I've got both a Traxxas Ken Block 1/16 Fiesta & a Slash 4x4 Ultimate.

As posted above fit some RPM A-Arms & you will never break another one again (under normal crashes, etc).

I like the fact you can bash & race the slash with a tyre change. I made the "A" main this week @ our local indoor track against the Hypers, Durangos, a Losi 4X4 & even a New Associated 4X4.

Decided to use Traxxas when I saw them @ Vegas SX last year, support those who support your sport.

Non moto? Really? Are you serious? They are a major sponsor of SX and have a demo in the pits at every round. That's where my kid decided on which one he wanted after watching it get launched 20 feet in the air over and over and after the Traxxas employee bragged about how reliable they were. And this thing won't hardly make a lap around the yard without a breakdown. Being Traxxas I'd say it's moto related. Any other brand, maybe not.

The a arms are junk obviously and the weakest point of the car. Half a dozen people have chimed in about RPM replacement arms, the parts are ordered and hopefully should solve the majority of the problems the car has. Hopefully others will see this and learn something from it as well including Traxxas. They should really make an effort to provide something to live up to their own advertising.

I started this hobby with my son with minimal stuff, and now we have spare everything- it will eventually break or wear out if you're driving the crap out of it. But it's been worth every dime and a learning experience along the way.

From what I've seen, there's nothing more durable for overall fun than the Traxxas 4x4 Platinum. If you want to race, go Losi or equivalent, but don't think you're not going to run the high end stuff without spare everything too.

We're really lucky here in North Dallas; we have a killer indoor track at Mike's Hobby Shop and they stock everything so you're never down.

I have a Blitz, SC10, and a Slash....and anytime someone that is new to RCing asks to drive one...I always hand them the Slash, becuase in my opinion its the most durable of them all...that thing has been cartwheeled, bashed full speed into curbs, even drove into the lake....and has never had any real issue...a couple of a-arms....but thats a given when you are bashing....

I have a big Traxxas Summit and a T-Maxx 3.3. The Summit has been amazingly strong. My 5 year old drives it 98% of the time. He got really good with it. The only thing that has happen to that truck is the diff gears blew. That was caused by my son jumping with the diffs locked. He has hit everything in sight, buried it in mud, and had it completely under water several times with no issues. I wash it with a hose and simple green. I can't imagine having any other truck for what we do. The T-Maxx I just picked up used for 40 bucks because the genius kid(neighbor up the street) didn't know how to put a glow plug in. That truck has been flawless so far, even though I have not owned it for long. Like others have said, if you're just a back yard shmow like my kids and I, Traxxas is great. I don't know nothing about the racing end though.

So you want to have fun at a club race? Try this, pop the can on a budy's stock motor shove is a 12 turn double armature, put it back together, don't tell him and watch the start.

Thanks for trying to find the bad in my post. If you knew the kid, you wouldn't have even considered writing that. The "kid" is 18. I helped him for the past 5 years to fix his dirt bikes, pedal bikes, and anything else he brought me to help him with. I helped him right up until he started doing drugs. I even tried to help with that, more so than his parents ever did.

So, if you really cared to know why, you could have said "why didn't you help him?" Not everybody on Vital is a bad guy.

As I now understand it, the swap likely 'funded' the neighbor kid's next drug purchase. Wink
