TTR50 experiences?

Got a brand new 2023 TTR50 for my boy for Christmas a few weeks ago. Upon start up it doesn’t want to keep idling and giving it any throttle causes it to die. Initially it seems like the idle is set a bit too low, however after about 10min of fidgeting with the choke to keep it running and letting it warm up it seems to do ok? Also there’s a slight hesitation/bogging in the first 1/8th of the throttle if you twist the throttle really quickly. My boy is coming from a Stacyc and is accustomed to an instantaneous throttle response, and while I know a carbureted air cooled 4-stroke isn’t a fair comparison, I feel like that hesitation might be frustrating for him. I’ve had a couple CRF50s through the years, but this is my first experience with a TTR50. I’m just wondering if these things are just really cold natured or if there’s an actual issue? FWIW, it’s kept in a climate controlled garage set to 65°, so it’s not a super cold start. If it’s that cold natured, then the electric start is a moot point. Anything I should check or is this just how they are?

These things are restricted as far as jetting and air intake

Check for air screw brass cap and remove it

I know where that is, should I add air or fuel to resolve the issue, and which way is which? I know some are backwards depending on the carb.

Sounds lean, I would turn the air screw out a half turn and see if it improves.  If all else fails pull the float bowl and check the pilot jet, you wouldn't think it would be plugged on a new bike but they are so small it doesn't take much to restrict them.

Thanks. I’ll remove the brass cap and give that a try. It seems to run fine once you get past that first 1/8 of throttle, but you have to roll the throttle on really slowly to get past it. Twist too fast and it bogs/cuts out.

Could be bad fuel/plugged jets. Clean that carb and see if that helps.

We had a TT-R 110 for several years and it was really cold-blooded. It didn't run right until it was good and hot.

So just to update in case anyone has a similar issue. This bike’s choke is a lever setup located up by the key, it’s not down on the carb. It’s got a cable that runs down to the carb. Anyway, when I flipped the choke lever off, the cable wasn’t fully retracting, so it was basically stuck at maybe 1/8th choke. A simple push down on the choke lever to ensure the choke is FULLY off seems to have resolved the issue. No idea how I didn’t catch this sooner, feel a bit stupid now. However in my defense, I’ve only started the thing maybe 3 times tops. lol It’s still cold blooded as hell, minimum 5-7min warmup time, but once warm runs fine. Not a huge deal for me, but for anyone with kids you know they want to ride NOW. lol Little man will just have to learn some patience. Thanks for all the help guys!

The old PW50s were the same. And cold blooded. Not a great set up but I'm sure it doesn't bother kids.
