Hey guys, looking to see if any of you might know this answer.
Q: can you put a 2021 piston pin in a 2017?
Background: My buddies 2017 is in for a top end. I have an extra piston pin from my 2021 here and his 2017 has some wear marks in it. With my harbor freight quality calipers it appears to be the same dimensions with the exception of the 2017 pin wall diameter being thicker. Outside dimensions are the same. They both appear to be damn close to the same weight.
honda has two part numbers for these, but, every aftermarket piston kit with a pin appears to cover years 2017-2022. I was going to call some engine builders but felt like an ass bothering professionals without buying something from them. Trying to save my man 80$
Hey man I can confirm you can use a 2017-2023 piston pin in a CRF450. They must of changed suppliers or something over the years but I've been using 2017 parts in hondas the last 3 years and they are the same.
You can't compare aftermarket to OEM as they are set up to use their own pins. Aftermarket pins may have different lengths and different chamfers on the end of the pin, which will change the lock groove spacing. The diameter has not changed and I'm 99% sure the length is the same and I highly doubt Honda changed their pin chamfer angle which is difficult to measure without the right tools. You can used your calipers to check the pin end float to see if it is about the same, if it is, you should be good.
