Forget GoPros... this guy risked it all with a camera bolted to his helmet in 1970
Before onboard cameras became normal, Triumph rider Don Castro was already showing fans what racing really looked like.
With a bulky camera strapped to his helmet, Castro gave audiences a rider's-eye view of the 1970 AMA Grand National Championship—long before modern technology made it easy.
Real racing. Real risk. No filters. No second chances.
Would today's riders be brave enough to race with that setup on their helmet?

Dude's neck muscles must be bigger than my quads.
Wonder if his helmet cam was what was shown in the first On Any Sunday movie.
Louie Franco had something similar strapped to his helmet for one of the Carlsbad 500cc USGP's back around 1982-84 range. That thing was huge, riding around on a flat track would be tough- but on Carlsbad? His neck probably still hurts today....
There was a local guy that attached a camcorder to his helmet at a local practice track back in the early 2000's. I think he duck tapped it onto his helmet. I don't remember exactly how it was attached. Just remember seeing him with a camera half the size of his helmet stuck to the side and out doing laps.
I asked him how it was to ride with and he said he got so used to it that when he riddes without it his head tilts to the side. Said at first it was a little heavy feeling but got used to it and had not broken any cameras at the point I talked to him. The track he was doing it at had a lot of rocks. I got him by a softball sized rock in my gentlemen's area . I watched it coming at me like it was a bad dream. moving slowly but I couldn't move quick enough to move out of the way and it made a solid hit. Felt like I was going to throw up for about 45 minutes. Amazing his lens never got hit.
There are some cool new Gopro branded cameras that were released. The mission series One that You can swap out lenses on ( Mission 1 ProILS) . You can use an adaptor and put just about any brands lens on from a DSLR , or mirrorless or micro four thirds ( MFT) lenses. Its setup to mount the MFT lenses from the factory and comes without a lens. It has some pretty amazing specs for an action camera.
They have a version that is almost the same camera with a regular Gopro lens setup too ( Mission 1 Pro) . and one just below it (Mission 1) with specs that are just a little less wild. the Mission 1 Pro and Pro ILS have up to 60FPS in 8K , 240 FPS in 4K , 480 FPS in 1080p . I thought I saw it could go up to 900fps , but I don't see that in the specs now. So maybe that was some speculation I saw before the real release. The Mission 1 has the same 1 inch sensor but the available FPS are knocked back to about half at the max FPS. The Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro are both still waterproof without a case up to 66'. The Mission 1 Pro ILS is not waterproof rated at all, because of the various lenses that can be used.
I hope that Gopro is working on a line of lenses for the ILS model. They could make that camera into a monster that could be built a little at a time by making a gimbal system and powered zoom lenses that could all be added on as You go. And be able to have a bigger setup for filming that You might have used a cinema style camcorder or DSLR on a gimbal . And then still be able to strip that same camera back down and stick it onto a helmet or other area a regular action cam would be used.
Its an exciting time to be enjoying filming and the tech that is available at a much more affordable price thanks to everybody wanting to be the next MR. Beast.
