I know this is going to be unpopular. Safety is the #1 concern. The medical team does not have their eye on the clock, they have their eye on the rider. Once they assess the situation, they radio to the finish line if a Red Flag is needed for the safety of the downed rider. Yeah it sucked for Max. Maybe an addendum to the rules? Stagger the start with a bike length for every second between riders?

I always question the “walk off”. Is it sometimes the riders ego wanting to walk it off, is it sometimes the medics saying to (we know this happens for sure). There should be one protocol and one protocol only

Exactly this. They took the decision to red flag it, I have no issue with that, but then when they have all the time in the world (figuratively speaking), they rush things and make McAdoo walk off the track with a neck brace on when the guy can barely stand.

The issue is not red flagging it. It’s restarting a race with 7 seconds to go, which is absolutely insane

Nobody is saying there shouldn’t have been a red flag if they needed it. It was the timing of it and the dumbass rules regarding that late of a restart.

While nobody is saying there shouldn't have been a Red Flag, many are saying they should have waited 7 seconds to wave the flag. That was the point of my comment. The medic does not have their eye on the clock, their eye is on the rider. Once the finish line receives the order to bring out the flag it comes out immediately

If the race is red flagged, you leave on a back board, no exceptions.

That was fucking dumb, they have no idea what he had hurt and neither did he.

I’m still occasionally mad about them letting forkner walk to the mule after the crash he had. I’m mad about how they let mcadoo walk off too, i hope they had Pierce on a backboard last weekend. Do more than what you think is needed to prevent further injuries, and maybe lawsuits.

Protocols don’t include backboarding based on mechanism. You can certainly have strong suspicions for injury based on mechanism. You backboard based on complaint, medical findings and pt willingness. You can strongly recommend backboards but ultimately if the pt refuses a backboard you can’t force it. You treat the best you can based on what the pt is willing to allow. Now apply that thought process to a stubborn, testosterone-filled, 20 yo male motorcycle racer. They always want to walk off.

I think the riders and fans alike just want some consistency.Rules are rules, safety is safety but also common sense is common sense. No red cross flag for 2 laps then straight to red flag? Time keepers and officials are (should be) in contact with each other, along with the medical crew. Medical crew needs a red flag? Time keepers and officials should know where they are in the race and have the common sense to know that waiting a few extra seconds whilst the race is pretty much a foregone conclusion is the smart thing to do

Apparently they don’t have red cross flags in whoop sections for whatever reason.

I hear you but two minutes is a pretty fast assessment on a rider from a medical provider.  They don't know what is injured or how severely in the first 30 seconds, it takes a little longer to ask some questions and check them out.  They are trying to do the best thing for the injured rider without worrying about race results.  Race results should not be part of their(medical providers) thought process.  I can see where waiting 7 seconds might be ok in this race but telling medical crews that the race is going to keep going based on a judgement call opens a whole can of worms ethically that you don't want opened.  That allows for an ambiguous rule that says we got a request for a red flag from the medical folks for some reason but we are going to keep racing for a little bit. I certainly would not want that as an injured rider.

McAdoo went down at the end of a lane and staying there puts him, flaggers, medical and whomever else is there at more risk of being hit by other riders.

I'm a low key Anstie fan and pretty bummed that this was the result but that's the way the rules are applied this year and this instance.  I know the AMA has been less than consistent over the years but "officially" everyone races under the same rules and it could have been someone else in the front that lost their time gap.
