Mid-rebuild organization

How do you guys keep your parts and stuff organized mid rebuild? I usually just lay everything out on my bench so I know the order it came apart and the order it should go back together. Unfortunately, I am starting to take on multiple projects at once and don't have enough room on my bench anymore.

I was thinking maybe a shelving unit?

Gallon sized ziplock bags. Each area of the engine gets its own baggie. Transmission, clutch, right side case gears, top end, crank, etc..

lay everything out neat and in order of removal and separated in component piles on bench. Take reference pictures of all of it laying out flat. Then if need be put all associates parts and hardware in zip lock bags labeled exact contents of what’s inside. I’m super anal about maintenance and that works for me and cuts down on assembly when everything is neatly labeled and together. I’ll never know how guys can just throw everything in a bin and a handful of screws all together and leave it for months. That would give me a panic attack, that’s how shit gets forgot or lost

This is what I do, too.

Also, because often I will not be able to work on the bike for a couple weeks, and there's no way I'm going to remember exactly where I left off on the project, I keep a couple note pads going. One stays in the shop that is a running reminder of what has been done, what needs to be done next, and the tools or parts needed to do that work.

Then the list of parts and stuff to get before coming back to the shop next time. It's incredibly frustrating when a full day gets derailed because I forgot to get a fugging M6 bolt!!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

I also like to finish, properly and completely, one section of the bike before moving onto the next area. That whole "I'll come back to that and finish it right later on . . ." thing does NOT work out for me. hahahaha I just end up leaving it done half shitty if I do that. So that's my way to keep myself accountable. Takes a lot longer but hey, gotta know your weak areas and work around them!

In the perfect world I would have large sized drawers like tool benches. Then I can lay everything out as it did on the table... just in a drawer.
