2005 RMZ 450

So after reinstalling the new valve cover gasket on my 05 rmz 450 I noticed the front (exhaust side) valve cover bolt was threading in funny..now I did not do this this is how the bike came to me..anyways long story short the cam cover on the exhaust side had the valve cover bolt hole stripped so took it (the cam cover) to a local shop where he put a heli-coil in it and should bolt the valve cover down good as new.

Here's what bothers me...I did not take the cover off with the engine at TDC..I did however release the cam chain tension before I did so. There was no resistance the 4 bolts on the cam cover came out just fine and I lifted the cam cover off and she sits in the shop now until I get the cam cover back on.

MY QUESTION is..is there any harm in removing the cam cover not being TDC? From now on anytime I am in there I will make sure I am TDC. I know when re-installing the cam cover SINCE I DID NOT remove at TDC, I will want to snug down the 4 bolts, bring the motor to TDC THEN TORQUE THEM DOWN TO 7.0 FT LB?

Is that correct and did I mess anything up by releasing cam chain tension, then removing cam cover WHILE NOT being at TDC?

And is the CORRECT TORQUE setting for cam cover bolts for a 2005 RMZ 450 7.0 ft lbs?

Bare with me I am waiting on my manual. Thanks for the help..

Shouldn't be to much of an issue just inspect everything and put it back on TDC when you re install

Also just google your rear of bike with manual in the search ... pull up a service manual it would tell you more then this thread can generate in a year about torque setting and manufacturer specifications...

The cam cover is exactly just that. It only covers the cam and has no mechanical bearing on any other parts within the engine.

I have seen that you have started a few threads regarding the same repair in the last day or so. You would be better to keep everything on the same thread so that the same people can keep up with your progress.

Not to sound like an ass-hat here but with the questions you are asking I would leave any of this type of mechanical work to a specialist as it sounds like you have a lot of questions that you should really know the answer to if you're performing this type of work. At the very least, as Tryhard explained, use the manual before performing any maintenance work. If he can find the manual in such a short time and you are performing work before trying to locate the manual I would be concerned about the work you are carrying out.

Again sorry if this comes across harsh or rude it's just if you get this kind of work wrong you will end up costing yourself a lot of money and extra effort.

You don't need a torque wrench for 10nm, if you have any idea you should be able to do it by feel.

Please sell this bike before you really make a mess of it.

Dude how many threads are you going to start? Its annoying that people give you the answer and tell you where to find answers and you completely disregard it and ask again. Read your damn service manual before you start doing anything. Really id reccomend you just take the bike to the shop before you screw it up.

I'm not gonna screw it up. I'm waiting on my service manual. It's not that hard nor difficult i just want to make sure i DO NOT over torque something so I ask. Apologies to the one I annoy.

I just want to apologise to everyone. I know I am very persistent. I jumped right back in after 15 years with not very much knowledge of these race 4 strokes. I will keep the thread count down I am just very happy with my bike and like to do my own work.

You need a service manual tho. I constantly read mine. Any question I can't find easily I ask on vital. There's a ton of helpful folks here. Smile

You can find a service manual used for next to nothing at times on ebay. Usually cost as much as a oil change

Aslong as the cam chain didn't come off of the cam you should be okay. Given that I don't have a manual, you should be able to set your bike to tdc, the check for markings on the cam sprockets. Typically (but not always) those line up horizontally with the head.
