Hi all,

I have decided finally to get my shock fixed. I went out and removed the seat, plastics and gas tank and unscrewed the linkage bolt allowing me to unscrew the uper and lower shock mounting bolts. I have done that and I can't figure out what I need to unbolt now to be able to remove the shock from the bike itself. The air box is blocking removing the shock from the rear and the frame is blocking it from being removed from the top. Do you know which way to remove the shock on this bike? I have pics of what it looks like now:

So if you could tell me what to do now that would be great (I don't have my service manual yet)

Also,

I have never had my bike serviced at a shop so I was wondering, The job I need to have done is going into the rebound adjusting valve and unjamming or replacing it. I don't know which. I asked the shop if they think they could do this procedure and they said something like there mechanics have the factory training of pro circuits or something like that. Could someone who knows about this tell me what I will need to have replaced and how much that part will cost? Also, i called the shop and told them my problem and they said the fix would be 75 dollars which is there hourly fee but would this job take longer than that? If they said it will cost 75 doillars and when i come back to pick up the shock they say it took them 3 or 4 hours to do the job. Because if it somehow takes them 3 hours to do this, I am screwed because I am getting a 100 dollar gift card to there for chrismas.

Thanks

It would probably be easiest to just remove the subframe, as you're going to have to re-install it too. Allen head bolts on the frame above where the swingarm connects (directly below the shock reservoir on bottom pic), another up top near where the frame screws into the rear fender, and loosen the clamp holding the air boot on the carb. Pull all straight back. Stuff clean rags in the carb and air boot. Until your service manual arrives, microfiche is a big help- go to kawasaki oem parts on motosport.com. to see how things fit together. There's probably a few local guys who can work on suspension cheaper than a shop, just have to find them.

Yeah!! He finally get that shock fixed!! JK, glad you are getting it done!

Remove the subframe (easy). Loosen the screw on the air boot where it attaches to the carb, loosen the clamp at the front of the muffler, take off all 4 (3) bolts holding the subframe on. Life the subframe, airbox, fender and muffler off as one unit.

Done.

I did what you said Terry and mxgreg. But it appears as if there are numerous more confusing bolts and screws I will have to take off. There is weld on the left side that looks like it is keeping it from coming off. I really need someone to show me in person. Here are a few pictures of what it looks like and tell me what I need to do next. Thanks!

This is the weld thing I was talkin about. Is this affecting anything?

Some more so if you can see what is preventing it from coming off:

Maybe I could just take the airbox off? It appears that the subframe just welds into the main frame to make one big peice. I think my only option would be to remove the air box from where the airbox connects to that rubber air tank thing.

NEVERMIND!!!

I got it off. I had to remove the airbox and rubber boot for the shock to come out as the sub frame is welded on. Thanks guys!

(now I hope I can remember how to put it all back together after it's fixed haha)

-HOW MUCH about will that part cost (if there is something I need to replace)

Lol, well don't I feel like an idiot! I had no idea the KX100 had a non removable subframe! Looks like you did the right thing removing the only part of the frame that was removable. See, it's not so hard to figure this stuff out eh??

Good Job! The more you do this you'll learn that working on your bike is part of the fun. If you dont have a book then taking those pics is a great idea so you have something to look at for reassembly.

Good you're learning but rear shock removal is 10 minutes. Top 14mm with a socket and extension on a ratchet. Lower, dogbone 14 and a 17 wrench disconnect rear (tire side). Then 14mm at bottom of shock, have someone lift swingarm up high to almost where tire hits underside of fender. Then grab lower portion of shock drop it down till top clears upper bolt tabs, then rotate shock so tank clears rear brake line and lower out that's it.

Please realize that not all bikes are the same. I didn't realize I could remove the rear shock out of the bottom (I still am not even positive I can). Most bikes have a subframe you can unmount so people were telling me to remove the subframe but it was welded on. i had to remove the airbox to get the shock out.

Thanks for next time though.

Your first set of pictures shows you got the top bolt out without removing the airbox. Then all you'd have to do is undo the bottom at the linkage like he said, and it drops out.

I removed the shock from the back so the air box blocked it from coming back.

I hit up the folks up at the local place here in Utah and buzzed em and said I was gonna need some repairs and i axed em how muhc he wants to charge me to do my shock over on the rebound and all that. he says he wanted to charge me 100 bucks for all the oil and oxygen recharge. plus parts and fixin my rebound on my shock for my bike. I'll be hittin the local bike shop and axin them if they even think they could fix my rebound shock and evrything. I don't know, I'll let you guys know as I go.

Nahh. I rolled down to my local bike shops and axen em if they even think they is capable of fixin my rear shock. They both seys they could pull it off but I aint gonna trust em to be tearin to my rear shock all like that. I can't have some redneck quader that don't know nuthin bout dirt bikes be tearin into my bike ya know. It just not my thing.

But seriously, One shop it would cost about 80 dollars to have it fixed if they even would fix it because the folks down there seemed a little messy and like they don't know all that much. I had to explain to the guy my problem about 5 times. They other place the mechanics knew what I was talking about and said they have heard of people jamming their rebound and have fixed that. They cost 112.50 for all of the labor include oil change and oxygen recharge. Or I could send it away to a big name company with cheap labor fees with people that know what they are doing.

So should I have the shop do it for 112$ or send my shock to a big name company(i.e Pro Circuit, FC) and who should I send it do?

I would have a shop that specializes in suspension repair the shock. You'll have to send it off. Don't be surprised if you spend almost enough to buy that brand new shock I posted the other day.

"BIGHEAD" on here takes care of my stuff. I imagine $125 to service it IF nothing is damaged inside.

Well, I doubt anything is really damaged because I didn't just ram the mother in there as hard as I could, I twisted the screw until it was somewhat tight. I didn't here a crack or anything when I did this and the clicker still makes noise and feels normal just the rebound is very slow when the oil is cold. When it warms up it feels almost exactly like any other bike. Someone even said it was a little fast at the track on a warm day after I rode. (he had had a few beers though)

When I walked in to the bike shop and asked them about it, they guy I had talked to on the phone earlier was surprised when I showed him what was wrong. He said it was 112.50 labor and then I say "On the phone you said it would cost 70?" He says "I didn't know we were going to have to actually tear the shock down" me, "Well, do you think I would have payed you 70 dollars just to mess around with the clicker?

So my options are:

1.)sending it to RG3 who said it would cost 80 dollars for labor (btw, how much will it cost for oil and nitrogen recharge?)

2.)Pro Circuit, who said: "If you sent the shock in it will be like 89 for labor and 110 for parts. We can definitely fix that thing for you."

3.)Factory Connection: "We charge $100 for the labor and then parts and fluids."

4.) Have bike shop fix it for $112.50 (mechanics said they have fixed this problem before)

5.)drive 1 hour to local pro action place, 100$

6.) get This: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Kawasaki-KX100-KX-100-KX-85-85-Shock-98-…

1 would be the cheapest probably but I don't know how much in parts? 2 I don't know if he ment 110 total in parts and service. 5, It will be hard getting all the way to him because I can't get anyone to drive me places.
6 seems a little too good to be true.

I know I am being kind of a pain but I want to make sure I make the right choice.

It seems like the bigger name companies charge more for labor.

Cam, I would buy that new shock but I just simply don't have the money.

I would drive the hour to pro action and have them fix it for the 100 dollars. Set it up on the phone and tell the guy you want to wait for him to do the repair. A oil change and charge is 80 bucks around hear.
They can do this type of work because around hear they go as far as rechroming shock shafts and to do that it is a total tear down.
Remember this they are helping you out you are not helping them so what they say goes.
