Indian 50cc Boy Racer

Edited Date/Time 8/6/2013 8:12am
So my MX125C is complete, I am looking towards my next project of trying to straighten up my 1970 Indian 50 Boy Racer which I have had since new.

During my parents divorce in 71, I lost track of the bike until 83. In taking care of my dad's estate after his passing, I found the bike, along with my 68 Honda Mini Trail and had them shipped back to Florida. They both ran, and still do, but they are in rough shape.

The Mini Trail is not going to be difficult to find the things I need for it. The Indian, not much out there.

Any bikes, parts, or what have you for a 1969-70 Indian 50cc Boy Racer I will be most interested in.

This is the 16 inch wheel model with the Jawa 50 engine , three speed , manual clutch.

Anything out there ?

You probably know about these guys:

Yes, thanks for the link. The engine in this particular model Indian is actually a Jawa type 23. Floyd Clymer used various engines for his two stroke Indian line. I have found most of the engine parts needed , but will have to send to the eastern european countries to get them.

The cosmetic part will be a bit challenging. Rims and spokes, paint, upholstery can be handled here in Florida. Need a bit of plating done as well.

I know I will probably never find them, but a set of original number plates will be the toughest nut to crack.

I will make my own molds. Then send them to a fiberglass company to get the final set with a nice gelcoat finish.

It will get there, slow but sure.

Did you ever race the Indian ?
I remember going over to Beau Bohannons house to buy my first race bike
(YZ 125 X) from him and he still had an Indian that had YZ 80 sized wheels
but I'm not sure if it was a 50 or a 75. He let my ride it and that thing was extremely
fast . Had 6 speed tranny . Do you know what that one was?

This is not my bike, but is just like what I own. During the late 60's-early 70's, my dad owned a Jawa / CZ / Benelli dealership in Bakersfield, California. I believe this is where the bike came from. Probably had all of the parts I am now searching for right there in his shop.

I can recall as a 5 year old kid the little Benelli's coming two to a crate being dropped off right to our house before the shop opened up.

If you happen to know of any parts or complete bikes like the one pictured, name your price.

Do you still have the 1970 boy racer? I have picked up a mess of a basket case and am looking for anyone who might know anything about them. I need technical info and parts. Thanks ,Steve

In '73 I rode a MX74. It was a 70cc with 4 speeds. There was also a MX76. Same size motor but had 6 speeds. Much bigger/longer than the "74". I tried both and the "74" worked better for me. It became a XR killer here in the Houston area.

Very nice work. I remember mine being exactly in that condition when my Dad brought it home in 1970. I doubt I will ever find such pieces as the plates, fender, heat shield for the pipe, but at I am still glad to have it after all these years.

Please post a picture or two of the completed bike. Would love to see them.
