That in most any online message board the one forum which is meant for all topics not pertaining to the websites main focus are usually filled with political and religious battles?

It points to the theory that the majority of users in online forums really just want to argue with someone about something.

Raise your hand if your political or religious opinion has EVER been changed by another members contrary point.

The horse has been dead for a while yet still it is attacked daily. Imagine the productive change which would have a chance of being initiated if all the fruitless debates here were replaced with persistent action.

Why does that blow up here? Just my opinion, but in the real world people tend to keep with and talk among people who think alike, and in this little town square begin to encounter people who, shockingly, think differently.

That's very . . . stimulating.

Plus, some people like pushing buttons. For fun.

IMO, most people don't change their perspectives and keep talking past one another.

Well I'm pleasantly surprised.
Coming from some of the most convicted members; I guess it does serve a purpose.

I'm not as convicted as people seem to think. I'm frequently labeled the unchanging one, but I'm the only one here that I know of who has changed his mind on major, major issues on many occasions due to finding more facts about them.

I've learned things! But have never changed my overall view on politics, or religion. There is definitely some very intelligent people here that have a lot of passion to speak about their views on lots of topics. I realize that I'm not at their same level of passion or intelligence of many here. That still doesn't stop me from giving my 2 cents.Wink

Same here!

But in life, not just here, one thing I do is that I NEVER "agree to disagree" because if it's something that can be proven, if I'm agreeing to disagree, that means I might be wrong! And if I'm not, the other person is, or both of us are, but "agreeing to disagree" never gets me down to knowing one way or the other.

All this, I have to thank to message boards

How is this only indicative of the Non-Moto forum?

There is an equal amount of redundant, set-in-their-ways bickering over bogus airlift rumors and 2-stroke/4-stroke drivel there as there are about politics and religion here.

All this futile squabbling about facts is like two fleas on a dogs back arguing which one owns the dog.

You get, at best, 60-70 years on this rock. Dont forget to enjoy the ride and dont sweat the small stuff. Youre gonna be rotting in the ground soon enough and the Universe doesnt give two-shits how many factoids you stuffed in your flawed blob of grey matter along the way.

I think Hillbilly said it best:

"You're not here for a long time, you're here for a good time. So find something you enjoy and let it kill you."

Very true...

I absolutely suck and getting my point across in writting...I'm a much better speaker and thus can make my points more clearly/effectively by speaking....

Doesn't make up for all my flaws on this board...but I get so frustrated with myself on this board sometimes because I can't effectively type what I'm trying to say.

I like the board because it's a great filter for ideas, theories I have about politics/life....if I brainstorm up an idea, I'll post it up here and see how it goes...if it can survive the Nerd/Dave fact filtration system it'd be a pretty good idea/thought/theory.

You should just speak out loud and then type what you're saying.

The biggest mistake people make in writing is that they try and write in a different way than how they talk.

I keep a cartoon by my desk with a person at a desk surrounded by wadded up balls of paper, captioned: "Writing is nature's way of showing how muddled our thinking is."

I can tell you from reading hundreds of transcripts that we rarely make as much sense speaking as it seems while we're doing it.

And I can tell you by transcribing a million interviews or so that that's true. The only advantage of verbal speech is you get body language and inflection.

But if you just write like you talk, you'll get there. You're not going to include all the "Umms" and "Uuuhhhs" and things like that anyway.

Well to me, "or so" means at least a million or even more. >=

Since this obviously couldnt be true, I have to dismiss his entire premise since it was the basis of everything he was saying.
