race is correct...greed, stupidity, ignorance. Most of the factors that make excellent politicians, lawyers, businessmen...societies supposed leaders. Also the exact same qualities that ensure societal downfall.
eddie...the pace would only seem slow if you were presuming that evolution preordained that humans were going to become a better version of themselves...if you turn that notion 180 then it is quite possible to witness the "de-volution" of the species, at a fairly rapid clip, I might add. Pinch

The increase in population is was gives me the most concern. Sure there are different models of population declining and then there are other models that show it blowing up. I remembered reading somewhere that about 10,000 years ago there was estimated to be about 1 million humans on Earth. About Christ time 10k years later it had climbed to about 200 mil. It would take another 1960 years (1960) to reach 3 Billion. So thats 1 mil to 3 bil in 1200 years. (if were to believe those numbers) Well in the next 40 years the Population went from 3 bil to over 6 bil. So it did in 40 years what it had taken 1200 to do. Doesnt that scare anyone? I cant imagine sex going out of fashion anytime soon and much of the increase in population is in 3rd world countries where there is little education and cultures that value large families.

The problem wont be restricted to only the poorest countries. I believe we are already seeing the effect here in the USA. For a society who is Capitalistic an ever growing "customer" base is necessary for sustained growth. But I cant believe that for every human born another job is created. Technology is a double edged sword. Robotics and other means of reducing the need for humans to produce products means even less jobs in the future. This leaves those that work having to pay outrageous taxes to support all the other humans who cant obtain work. And you know what happens if you dont make sure everyone has a roof over there head and a meal in their tummys right? Like a guy on here one time told me when we were discussing a water shortage (Im paraphrasing) "Doug, if you had a bottle of water and my son was dying of thirst and you wouldnt give me the bottle....Id kill you for it" Multiply that by Billions of thristy/hungry people.

Help me out here. These population numbers soaring ever faster...is that called expotential or logrithmic or something?

Price and delivery systems. We need a way to pipe that water around the World. Too impractical to try to ship it.

And if we managed to feed everyone and get them all water and shelter then they'd have even more offspring. Humans are like a cancer on this rock
