No More Cable

Edited Date/Time 10/26/2015 4:07pm
Se we cut the cord this week and are now interweb only. For you guys that did the same thing,
any suggestions? Used to watch a little bit of network TV and the wife enjoys HGTV and Food network,
Going to miss watching the races though. Can't believe how expensive cable has gotten.
Do you typically have a dedicated computer hooked up to your tv? and navigate web with computer?

Well, Ive never had cable or satelite but we recently threw out our 300lb tube tv I bought in 02 and replaced it with a smart tv from samsung. I THOUGHT..... I would be able to stream the MXdN on it but it wouldnt work as the TV has no options for adjusting the picture quality and would only stream in the best quality, thus my $50/month 2mg( I think its mg) download speed on my internet isnt good enough to do that so the stream would stop and go constantly....more stop then go....Angry I cant get better internet out here in the country without doubling my bill so thats not an option.

We have discovered Hulu however. I think its $12/month for commercial free streaming of re runs of a lot of newer tv shows and they have movies and TONS of documentaries. We like to watch The Middle, Modern Family and Blackish on Wed. nights so we just watch it commercial free on thursday night on Hulu.

As far as watching sx/mx races, just step in the race thread on race days and someone usually has a decent stolen stream that you can click on to watch on your computer. Thats what I do.

Lots of different options for viewing your TV shows the day after they air. When I am traveling and need to watch the races I usually link up to a European service and watch the races or football or baseball or etc.... I was actually going to cut my Dish Network off a few months ago when the head salesman for the area stopped by and dropped my bill in half and gave me the NFL network for the year for free.

Try a few of these sites out for your TV fix, (word of caution run Firefox or Chrome with lots of Adblockers though)
Couchtuner
Watchseries
Project TV
Sports Stream

Enjoy!

Skip the computer and look into a streaming device for your tv. I suggest a Roku, I love my Roku 3. I only hook the laptop to the TV for SX races. I use the RedBull TV app for Straight Rhthym, the NBC Sports app for MX, and the LiveStream app let's you watch SX practice/qualifying. For TV shows and movies we have Netflix, Hulu, and we're Amazon Prime members which includes their Prime TV. There are a lot of other apps on the Roku that are free. The Roku 4 is out now which supports 4k and also has a "lost remote finder" which would be handy. The wife and I still watch the same shows we always did, the only difference is we get them a day later than when they originally air. Even after paying roughly $8-$10/mo each for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, we still save around $100/mo.

I cut cable/satellite TV when I moved into my new place last spring. I have bunny ears getting me CBS, NBC, PBS, ABC, FOX, and a handful of other channels in HD. We have Netflix for movies and other shows. My parents have DirecTV so I kick them a little bit money to use their login on things like WatchESPN, NBC Live Extra, and other stuff through Apple TV. If it's something I can't get through Apple TV apps then I stream it through my laptop from a free site like firstrowsports.eu and display it to my TV.

If you don't pay your bill one month and then see a $450 bill to get caught up, that might give you motivation. Wink

We presently have netflix, does the roku have a monthly fee?
What I think we'll miss right off the bat is watching news.
I like to have FNC on in the mornings for background noise,
and the better half likes network news in the evening,

No monthly fee. You buy it, hook it up and use it. The only monthly fees we have are Netflix and Hulu, and Amazon Prime is paid yearly. I have the Fox News app, NBC news, as well as my local NBC and ABC news affiliates, so I can still get my local news/weather. All those apps are free.

Although Roku doesn't have a monthly fee, it does require a credit card number to be on file for any purchases you might make(movies, games, etc). The good thing about it is you have to enter a 4 digit PIN number to make a purchase, so the kids can't be buying stuff when you're not around.

I met a guy the other day that was selling some sort of boxes that he claims you can watch all sorts of content for free.
All the paid channels, current movies, sporting events,... claims that it's legal because you are watching a streaming content rather than downloading it. Anybody know anything about this? Seems suspicious.
costs about $250

I just got an amazon fire stick and set it up so I could get the "Kodi" application. Now I can watch live TV, movies that are in theaters, and tons of archived shows. Just google "Kodi Genesis fire stick". For $40 you can't beat it. You do need pretty good internet for the streams to keep up though.

How do you watch the NBC sports app (or Fox Sports) without a TV package that includes it?

I just looked up the Kodi app. Did you literally just download the app and that was it? What live channels do you get?

You only need to log in with a TV provider on the NBC Sports app to watch the races live. The MX races are uploaded the same time that they are archived on promotocross.com, which is usually later Saturday evening or early Sunday, no TV provider needed. It works for me, because I'm usually outside on Saturdays in the summer, so I can watch them later at my convenience. As for SX, I have to hook up the laptop and I use Hola and LiveStream. There are some sacrifices, but that's how I do it.

We use Roku, pay for SlingTV, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Just recently discovered MOBDRO, seems to be a good app for us Android users. I will never go back to cable/satellite.

I bought an AppleTV and then found a friend that has all the cool channels and traded him some beer for his login info. Works like a charm! lol

Want to drop Direct TV also, only keep it to watch races. I live in the sticks, so no real good options for high speed internet, if I had that I would for sure get rid of DTV. One thing for you that have it, call in and threaten to drop it, usually will get your bill dropped for 6 months along with free movie chanels

Our UVerse TV and internet bill is $240 but I have all of the movie channels and the UEverything package. . . I want to be able to cut the cord but just can't do it. I think internet only is $80 or so. That's almost $3,000 a year that I'm blowing on TV and internet. $2,000 on TV.

Holy shit man, we pay $65 for Directv plus $69 for our internet/phone through Nextlink out of Weatherford. And I have the NFL package, but no HBO/Skinamax stuff we never watch it anyway. We usually just watch HGTV and the cooking channel and of course motocross and supercross.

I do pay the $8.99 or whatever it is for Netflix though, we use the Apple TV to watch it mainly or when I am in the garage I stream my laptop in there to get caught up on stuff.

We started out at around $129mo TV/Interweb/Phone, then it went to $149, then it went to $220
I called Cox, they said nothing they can do the price is the price. So after about a year of getting
totally hosed. We called this week to cancel. Surprise, when you want to cancel they magically can
reduce your bill back to $150 for one year. But you have to commit for 2 years. and if you cancel after one year,
$120 cancellation fee. So now we're on internet only, $60mo (I think 50mbps transfer speed)

I wish they would do an ala cart type program. I don't need all the church and Spanish channels I'm paying for but never watch. It gets talked about every few years but nothing comes of it. They've got us by the short hairs.
