I just had my 1976 Harmon Kardon Citation 16a and 17 amp/preamp completely refurbished. I bought it new at RAF Lakenheath England (Electric Avenue for anyone old enough to remember that place). It was soaking wet when I received it back in the states in 1980, when I rotated back to the states. Needless to say, it didn't work when I unpacked it. It's been in the shop twice over the decades but no joy. I finally found a guy that accepted the challenge. Over 40 years later...it lives again. Now he is replacing the foam suspension rings in my JBL L65 Jubal speakers. For anyone that knows old hifi...this is a righteous combo...if you don't know...you are missing out on what music CAN/SHOULD sound like. It's as close to the sound of a live concert as I've ever heard. (I have recently become a fan of the old tube stuff as well...it's so deliciously rich).
I have a 26 yr ol Kenwood receiver in the garage that I retired as it did not have a Subwoofer outlet connected to this Pioneer EQ. I had no idea it was worth this, guess I should try to sell it?
It was one of the early Dolby pro logic surround sound and I loved it. Picked up these Cerwin Vega speakers 4 houses down at a garage sale for $100 it sounded awesome! I still use the Speakers.
So I picked up this Yamaha receiver and its so confusing to use I never have taken the time to figure it out. I think you have to talk in the remote to adjust the rear speaker sound or something like that.
I like old school better.
I’m trying to find some old Pioneer equipment for some records my wife has. A pioneer SX 1250 is on my wish list.
Pretty hard to find anything reasonable. I’ve pretty much given up for now.
The Shop
I saw a Sansui AU-30000 going for $10k the other day. What a beast but out of my price range.
I've got 2 complete-ish hi fi systems at this point.
Main system in the living room is a McIntosh MA252 and Technics SL1200G connected to Pioneer HPM 100's. I keep thinking about upgrading them to the new JBL L100 Century reissues but haven't pulled the trigger since I dig the Pioneers so much.
My bedroom system is a Marantz 2270 I bought in 2006 before prices took off, a Pioneer turntable, and some EPI speakers.
For the longest time I had the Marantz hooked to the HPM's and honestly liked the sound as good or better than the new hybrid tube McIntosh, but the McIntosh does have more headroom. If my house caught fire I'd be running inside to grab my restored minibike and the Marantz, lol.
Sounds absolutely fantastic. They really don't make then like they used to.
I have to have some caps replaced, but it will be worth every penny that gets put into it.
