I've been thinking about getting an external hard drive. I use 3 different computers and would like to be able have all the same files on each without actually putting all the files on them.

What are the capabilities of these? Can you run programs off of them? Any suggestions on which one to get? I don't need a lot of room, 100GB should be sufficient.

I just got a Mybook from Western Digital 500GB $99. I am loading every CD I own onto it. So far no problems.

Get one that's well ventilated if you plan on using it often. I've had issues with smaller cases and heat build up.

Just buy an enclosure and put what ever HD you want in it.

I've never had a problem with Lacie drives. 7200 rpm and triple interface ones work great.

same thing I bought a couple months ago from buy.com.
get it online, not at best buy or circuit city, else you'll pay too much.

I used mine for all my mp3's and all my digital pics.

I have 6 external hard drives and another 6 IDE drives I have replaced and that are sitting on shelves that I can access via a USB/IDE interface.

I use a program called Karens replicator (free) to do scheduled backups.

I switch out my main hard drives every 2 years or so and reinstall the OS and programs. I then use those drives as secondary (backup) drives and "grab" my data back off of those on to my new main drive. They are so cheap anymore, that you should back up everything you have to several.

I have a 500GB external USB/Firewire drive I have about 75 bucks in. I have it partitioned out with Linux, NTFS, and FAT32 partitions and have it set up so it can boot Fedora 9 (Linux) right from the drive and automatically mount all the partitions or if you plug it into an already running system it will mount whatever partitions it is capable of. Very handy for many things. I back up my other systems to it, I can boot Linux on any machine that will boot with a USB HD, it also stores a lot of movies and songs.
