Fry confirms 270 Brawn staff to lose jobs (GMM) Brawn GP chief executive Nick Fry has confirmed reports the British team has decided to shed nearly 40 per cent of its workforce.
We reported last week that officials of the former Honda outfit had informed its 700 Brackley based staff by letter that 275 of them will be made redundant.
"It's very unfortunate that we've got to do that but it's the change of technical regulations and obviously we are now a private team," said Fry, on the day the rebranded team secured a one-two victory on debut in Australia.
Brawn also signed a significant sponsorship deal with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group in Melbourne, the British billionaire confirming the coup is worth "tens of millions" to the newly-independent team.
But the new annual budgets will still be much smaller than in the Honda era. "We are about 700 people at the moment and we talked to the staff about going down to about 430, something like that, which is where we were in 2004 (as BAR)," Fry said.

Montreal could be back on F1 calendar UPDATE (GMM)
Talks with Bernie Ecclestone about reviving the Canadian grand prix have taken place, Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay said on Sunday.
He was responding to reports that the race could return to the calendar this year, as a substitute for the inaugural Abu Dhabi round, whose organizers have reportedly fallen behind schedule amid the global financial crisis.
"We have been talking with Bernie Ecclestone about it coming back in 2011 and 2010," Tremblay confirmed to the Montreal Gazette.
However, he stated that he would be reluctant simply to offer Montreal as a one-off substitute for Abu Dhabi.
"We don't want to have it just in 2009. We want a long term agreement that respects our ability to pay," said Tremblay.
He insists, however, that Montreal organizers would be able to arrange an event this year, with the Melbourne rumors hinting at an October date.
"We have a lot of good people who have organized the races for many years," he said.
Promoters of the traditional Canadian round at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve fell out with F1 chief executive Ecclestone last year over a dispute about race fees.
An earlier dispute also saw the other North American round, the United States grand prix at Indianapolis, stage its last race in 2007.
NC couldn't afford the transpo for a year. Shit, a F1 teams budget each year could put a dent in the National debt.
If they think they can afford F1 on a Nascar budget, they have been drinking too much 2 buck chuck!

When we first went there and saw the garages, paddock, etc, I couldn't believe that F1 still came there. It definitely isn't up to F1 standards.
And the track deteriorates every year. It even broke up for our race, and our cars don't have anywhere near the downforce or grip that an F1 car has.
The track is definitely in a beautiful setting, but it needs a lot of work.
The fans were awesome, and to be able to stand on the podium there with our team after winning in '07, thinking about all the F1 history there, it was a definitely emotional moment that I will always remember.
