Discuss, was he really better? I'm not a huge Shaheen fan, but Emig and RC really make the broadcast great.

I would trade Eckman for RC and Emig any day, even if the evil added is Shaheen, I really think Ralph has evolved, and can only get better?

A lot better than The guy doing the opening song!

Art was great with commentary, but I actually think Ralph has a closer connection to the riders. I hear how awesome Art was, but I remember him actually calling a KTM a "KTW" once. I lost it...
From what I hear, Art was a stat master. He was good with throwing in stats, but he probably had a cheat sheet.

RC is awesome. Emig is good too, I just wish he would work on his basic grammar. "He has came here today and really put on a good race." Blink It sounds like nitpicking but the man commentates for a living.

No. But that doesn't excuse Shaheen's employers.

I Agee, though you have to remember, Emig is a hero to people that have speech impediments, he used to have a BAD stutter.

Yes, I've heard. I grew up watching Emig race and I'm a huge fan.
Once i was in the media booth at Atlanta Supercross and the elevator opened and he walked in. I was playing it cool but I was like "holy shit!" Probably would have stuttered myself if we spoke.

+1 for Emig overcoming the speech issues. He does a fine job.

Bailey and Art were a great duo.

Way better. His voice made the racing sound epic. "Here comes Carmichael bar to bar with Jeremy McGrath!!". Ralph is getting better. Last year he was really bad at times.

In my opinion ,YES ,Art was better.

I always liked how he told a story, and in a sense with his stories it always seemed like he had great respect for the riders. He also had such a serious tone /voice....it sounded very professional.

Art did also have his Artism's....at times.
But all in all, I think he was great for the sport.
And teamed up with DB,they were a dream team. Smile

Edit: Here is a classic Art Bar 2 Bar read.
I always loved the way he worded stuff.

Art Ekman’s voice quality was far superior. Not really Ralph's fault that he was born with the voice of a weasel. Ekman never had a favorite rider. Ralph would have himself surgically attached to Stewart’s ball sack if James would let him.

The only thing that does mildly annoy me is when Jeff will purposely bait Ricky into describing something out on the track e.g "Ricky maybe you can tell us and the people at home what it's like winning that first race" etc. Besides the fact that it's usually a boring set-up, it's always better when they commentate naturally together.

To answer the question I think Art and David were a great combo "but" that's a big part due to David - he's just naturally a very very good commentator. Paul Malin does a good job in the GPs imo but again, the couple times he's had David in... absolutely fantastic. Ralph is fine imo, I don't know why people get so worked up about him.

I have a feeling Art benefited greatly from the presence of Mr. Bailey.

Vital wasn't around when Eckman was commenting so he didn't have to worry about you punks analysing every word he said. I like Ralph, he da man.
