good or bad idea?

James was crazy fast in his heat and the main...but, he was also all over the track for 4 or 5 laps of the heat. He made some big mistakes and of course fell.

Would 2nd timed practice have smoothed out the rough edges?

No. the track changes every lap let alone every practice/race. the lines arent no where near the same, or the bumps, holes ect.

that place is just brutal at james is to fast and unsafe to ride it clean.

He rode the whole second practice. He just never put in a fast lap. The first time he jumped the spine jump was the last lap of the second practice.

maybe he was saving some energy...knowing that poto"s got speed and aldon on his side-but didn't want to give up an opportunity to see if the track was changing or deteriating-

In his heat, they showed James and his run through the pack after he fell. He was flying, but making a lot of mistakes. Of course, everybody else was going slower, but maybe they were making all kinds of mistakes too, we just didn't see them.

He smoothed out after he got in the lead IMO, i.e., after getting few more laps in.

The crash in the main was a brain fart IMO. Nothing more.
