THE South Australian Government will confiscate and crush monkey bikes, or miniature motorbikes, being ridden on streets or in public places.
The bikes, usually powered by a small petrol motor but capable of speeds of up to 70km/h, are already illegal on public roads.
But Attorney-General Michael Atkinson said today the Government would amend legislation to impose both a $5000 fine and to allow police to confiscate bikes when people are caught riding them in the street or a public place.
Bikes confiscated would be crushed, he said.
"Monkey bikes may seem harmless, but they are actually dangerous for riders, pedestrians, other vehicles on the road and other people using parks and open spaces," Mr Atkinson said. "People have already lost their lives because of these bike and I don't want to see these bikes cause any more injuries or fatalities."
The half-size monkey bikes are classified as a motor vehicle, but can't be licensed because they do not comply with vehicle standards or Australian design rules.

We will crush these bikes and then make it near impossible for any person to start a bike track even though we have more land available than any other country around the place.
True Story
The Shop
This is what I had to do to get into a track in Western Australia.
1. Get a Recreational License... $85
2. Get a Marshall License ... Free but takes 4 hours
3. Then pay a registration fee at the local track which was around $280 a person + 3 days of track maintenance called Busy Bees a year
4. Need Private Health Care
Now I have a key so I can ride but I need a Marshall to watch my ride (My wife).
Here are some other rules
1 Level One Marshall to every 5 Riders
1 Level Two Marshall to every 10 Riders
No more than 20 Riders on the Track
Track is open on these days:
Thursday Afternoons
Saturday after 1
Sundays
Public Holidays
Other Riding Rules:
Only 1 class on the track at any one time for 15 minutes then the next class can go riding, classes are:
1. Open Dirt Bike (All riders 16+)
2. Open Quad (All riders 16 +)
3. SchoolBoy
4. 85cc
5. 65cc
6. 50cc
7. Junior Quad
Which means if there is 1 person from each class at the track you ride for 15mins then rest for 90 mins.
