Any advice on wether I should change this tire or not? New to motorcross and don’t know if I’m at the point or getting close.

is that an old Bridgestone 404???

I would change it, the edges are all gone and they are worn pretty well down to the dimple or whatever you want to call them on the side knobs.

Any advice for a new tire combo? I ride a local sand track and a few dirt tracks here in NY. Nothing really too hard packed, I was looking at Dunlop mx33’s...

those were great tires and lasted forever... you can still get some life out of those though if you are still learning... it isn’t critical at this point depending on terrain. If you are running on unprepped practice tracks you can still get away with it, if you are in muddy and over prepped tracks you probably are struggling for traction though.

The Bridgestone X30 is comparable to the 404, it is a good overall tire for most conditions.

Wow that's shot. If your front tire looks anything like that you are at real risk anytime you go on the track. Unless you are even slower than me.

I'm an old slow guy. I get 10-12 hours on a rear, flip it for a fresh edge and get 10 more. Then I change both the front and back. 2-3 sets a year usually.

Fast guys won't get more than 5 hours each side. I have a couple of friends on 450s that can destroy a rear in even less time especially at Washougal on a dry day.

Try the Pirelli MX32 mid soft. They work real well in sand and most dirt other than blue groove. The front is the best tire I've ever used and the price is good.

I wouldn’t say I’m not learning because you always are but I am pretty comfortable riding on the track nearby. A tire is a cheap investment and piece of mind, I kinda felt like I didn’t have much traction last Sunday but was wondering if it was just the lines I was taking that day, I guess the tire explains it..

For sand tracks plus soft dirt you will want a soft or mid soft tire. Mx33, Mx3s, Starcross 5 soft, Bridgestone x20, Pirelli mx32 mid soft, Maxxis Mx st. Keefer has a podcast reviewing most of these tires if you want more specifics on what each one does. The mx33 front gets mixed reviews. Some like it and some hate it. The Mx3s front most seem to love but the side knobs will crack off if used on too much hard pack. Supposedly the Starcross sometimes will if you don’t run high enough pressure. Bridgestone and Dunlop will need less air pressure than pirelli/Michelin.

In my experience the Pirelli and Mx3s fronts are pretty consistent through a corner. The mx33 front had a ton of initial steering and then fell off towards the end of the corner.

If you buy Dunlops from a Dunlop pro dealer there is usually a $20/tire rebate. Michelin runs rebates pretty often too but right now it is not a great rebate because you have to spend $250 to get a $40 rebate.

yeah then may as well get a new one... nothing like ripping a new tire!

i just didn’t want to come across like some can on here and make fun of the tire, how worn it is, try to say how fast they are and only can get an hour or two out of tire... you know how this place can be.

You I was watching some of Keefers reviews, maybe a mx33 rear and a mx3s front maybe an option

That is his Dunlop setup. I think he also likes the Pirelli.

Yea man, that tire is spent. I pulled a set of decent Bridgestone X30's off my RM-Z 450 for a set of MX33's and it was the single best change I've ever made to a bike. I've always liked the X30 because it was a lot more durable than the MX3S. I couldn't afford to change a tire every three races because of it ripping the lugs off. I put 5 races on these MX33's this fall, also in NY, and they look great. Front still looks brand new and the rear has just started to loose it's edge

I don't know how much they cost in the US, but in Australia the Maxxis MX ST are around $30-$40 cheaper per set than a set of pirelli's/Bridgestone/Dunlop.

For the conditions you ride the Maxxis will be awesome, I've run both the Pirelli and Bridgestone and prefer the Maxxis over either of them.
