Is he buying the Honda's or is Honda giving him bikes?
Is he getting any kind of Factory support from Honda?
What is Mitch's part in all of this?
Is he paying Pro Circuit to build the bikes?
Or is Pro-Circuit a sponsor?
So there are a lot of questions to be answered on that... If he is totally paying for it out of his pocket... Yeah... I would say he is a privateer this year.

How would PC building his engines disqualify him as a privateer? Pro Circuit is not a "factory"

Yeah, he's got some endorsements and support from some companies that give more support than an average privateer (Chad does bring a pretty solid resume to the table.). But from what it looks, he's paying for everything, being the role of team manager, and racing all at the same time. Sounds very privateer to me.....just not your classic "drive your van or pickup/on your last dime" story.
Plus, he's making his own decisions, which I'm sure he is loving now after being on factory teams for so long. Good change of pace I'd say.
Honda doesn't have to pay his salary just like Yamaha does't pay James a dime, but they do give James every bit of technical and factory parts he needs because he puts thier brand on top of the podium. ie he rides a factory bike! Honda would be stupid not too as well. Chad gives them thier only chance to beat James and get a title.
Also Chad is a shrewd businessman. Bel-ray will be paying a lot of money to be on his team, and don't be surprised to see Chad show up at A-1 with a Verizon rig or some other huge sponsor like James has in L&M. Word has it he has a friend in Aus with bottomless pockets. I suspect he has had a huge sponsor in his pocket for quite some time now but hasn't let on ...yet.
And don't forget, now that he is on a bike that suits him, he is the favorite to win the outdoor title IMHO.
flame away!
So end of debate.
Sort of.
