Interesting article, and something for many of us to keep in mind:
Bust Out the Fish Oil

Concussions are a big problem in contact sports like Football and Hockey. My son plays elite stream hockey, and is currently out due to his second concussion. This one is due to fighting in practice. He and a teamate went at er... and while he won the tilt, he lost the battle with the ice when he hit his head on the way down. He stepped on a stick during the fight, lost his balance and then went over backwards. After a couple days with headaches, the team doc told him hes not playing this weekend, and until he can practice with no headaches or nausea.

So, a few concussions, and you need to ask if its really worth it. He won the fight.. ( the other kid needed a few cuts stitched up) but something as stupid as your head bouncing off the ice... or the ground as in motocross.. and you could be fighting concussions and post concussion syndrome for a lifetime.

I just called the boy to go buy some fish oil, and start taking 4 to 5 a day for the next few weeks. Then, just take a couple a day. Cant hurt. Interesting article, thanks for posting it.

I read the ESPN magazine article yesterday, and went looking for more information today.

Here's the first article I read:

Hope it helps with your son - certainly looks like it can't hurt. Please let us know what happens.

Reminds of the old 60's saying that fish is brain food.

“Animals receiving the daily fish oil supplement for 30 days post concussion had a greater than 98 percent reduction in brain damage compared with the animals that did not receive the supplement,” Dr. Sears said. “It is hypothesized that the omega-3 fatty acids in the fish oil reduced the neural inflammation induced by the concussion injury.”
Dr. Sears said that this is important for the general public to realize and especially vital for parents to know since approximately one-half of the emergency room visits for concussions in America are children aged 14 and under.
“One implication of the study is that concussions, such as those that occur in football, may be best treated with immediate high-dose fish oil supplementation to reduce brain inflammation. The same may hold true of all brain trauma patients,” he said.

I take plenty of fish oil gel tabs. Good for your heart and tons of Omega 3's. The stuff works wonders for keeping a body in tune.
