Engine problem's????

1998 KX 250 smoker.

Start's right up, Idle's fine, Run's fine till I wick it open, Then sputter's bad!!!

I clean my filter after every ride. I took off my carb and cleaned it knowing damn well that wasen't the problem. Still sputter's... Took off my top end to see if the exhaust valves were gummed up. Clean as a whistle.. Reed's look fine. Repacked the silencer, Even though it wasen't ready(Did it about a month ago).

The O-Ring's on the pipe a worn a little(Where it goes in the head). But I can't see that making it run poorly. Can it?? I'll replace them after work but I really don't think that's my problem!!

Could it be an electrical problem?? I don't see how, But that's all that's left. What the hell am I missing?? Compression check show's 140 pound's. Book say's spec's are117-168.... Thank's for any help!!!!!

Mixture sounds a little rich . Also get some new gas and oil about 40-1 ratio. Plug could be fouled.

I'm sure you ckd the plug when you did compression ck. but I had this problem when the metal pc that wraps to the electrode broke, or maybe a cracked or chipped reed petal?

Cygnus is just jealous cause its cheaper to fix whatever it is than his heavy in & out of the shop 4 banger

Reeds being cracked, or not sitting tight on the reed block can cause that. Otherwise I got nothin.

My 450 Honda has never been in a shop. I am training with some WMA pros today here for the national. What are you doing ?

Probably the pulser coil or CDI going bad . On the 98 dinosaur .

I can see a little air gap when I look through the reed's! Delta V Force. But I have another KX the same year and it look's the same, And run's just fine.

Swapped the plug, but it looked good.

I have recentaly changed from Spectro to Amsoil! Running the same mixture 50-1 like I have since it was new!

Screw you Cygnus!!!! J/K... I can't belive I can't figure this one out!!! WTF!!!

CDI box and coil is gonna be my next guess, But I can't see either one being intermittant!

If you have another bike . Just swap some parts . I have seen both pulsers and cdi's be intermittant.

I'm gonna swap tonight, How the hell can they be intermittant?

I thought it either had spark or not! Guess I was wrong...... Not the first time though!!!!

CDI's have different circuits for advancing the timing curve. The high rpm side might be fried .

Cygnus, Actually, back in 04' I came up there and rode Lakewood, Berthoud, and Milliken, and Watkins, all in 5 days. Never knew about your place!!!!

Right side crank seal. Absolutely 90% positive. Seen this alot on those.

Replaced it last year for the first time... Started smoking real bad.... No loss in performance, but smoked like a sum bitch!!!!

Todder, usually they clean up on top when crank seal goes... but run like crap down low.

cygnus has the right idea with electrical. swap stator first, then CDI.. almost never coil

eh, swap CDI first since it's easiest... but more than likely it's your stator.

Let me know as soon as you find out I am having the same problem with my 02 CR250 smoker, had to turn the idle way up just to get it to idle. When it first started happening I pulled the reeds and yes the bottom one was missing a small chunk about the size of a pinky nail. Put new OEM one's in cleaned the carb and rejetted ..... still doing it whenever I crack the throttle hard but not when I roll it on easy and yes it does clean out on top but sputters heavily in the low-mid....can a worn out top end really have this effect?

(Recently bought it used so I dont know when the top end was last done)

It's a good bit hotter around here than it's been for the last few months. Have you tried leaning the jetting out a little? Try dropping the main one or two sizes (i.e 180 to 175) and drop the needle one position.
