Team USA's Move: Era-Defining Reset 1

Mike Pelletier details a seismic shift for motocross' most prolific nation.

"Team USA has one goal – win," shouted Mike Pelletier on the eve of Team USA's official announcement. From coast to coast, 340,000,000 Americans can rest easy knowing their nation will field its most competitive lineup for just the second time in the last decade.

Chase Sexton, Haiden Deegan and Eli Tomac form a true 'dream team' – the kind that should evoke fear in rival nations – that'll enter as clear favorites to claim a record-extending 24th victory. Unveiling a trio of current and former champions with nearly two months to spare signals the stability and structure the team has craved for years – the kind of shift that marks an era-defining reset for motocross' most prolific nation.

Roger DeCoster will guide Team USA no more. The legendary manager, who held the role for 44 years, has passed the torch to Pelletier – an esteemed figure known across the sport as the AMA's Director of Racing. DeCoster chose to step aside, contrary to reports that he was pushed, in a move welcomed by all as it removes bias and infighting from the SMX World Championship community.

"Before making this change with Roger, I actually went around the paddock and had these conversations at all of the trucks," Pelletier recalled. "I wanted to make sure that this made complete sense to everyone who operates in our ecosystem. We have the full support of the paddock, it feels like, so hopefully this is the start of an era full of excitement and refreshed minds.

"We have been building that structure for some time. We do not have any ties to brands or sponsors, so the teams can be honest with us about silent injuries and contract changes. They are extremely open with us and that is a positive step for the operational side of our team. The AMA – a sanctioning body and federation – is throwing everything we possibly can at this."

For years, Team USA has been criticized for dysfunction and a lack of cohesion. Separate radio channels, missed strategic opportunities and disjointed arrangements have dominated headlines more often than results. This trend has begun to fade over the last two seasons thanks to the AMA's efforts to mend old cracks – a process that, with these changes, looks set to accelerate.

Pelletier looks to maintain a thousand-foot view, making improvements in specific areas whilst allowing the true professionals to operate at their best. "We will be doing a lot of media, but once we get to an event then it'll almost be business as usual," he affirmed. "This is what all of these people do each week – they are great. Each team manager will work with their rider, then we'll come together as a support network to make strategic decisions. This is what the riders and teams are most comfortable with."

DeCoster exits with a critical contact list, a fact that is not lost on Pelletier. Overlooked, however, is that Pelletier himself has become a transatlantic beacon in a crowded industry via a role as an FIM Delegate at select MXGP events. Present at the Indonesian double-header last season, then both Loket and Lommel just last week, his repertoire with the powers that be in MXGP has grown exponentially. It is another notch to his professional belt, one that will aid the team in its post-Roger existence.

"A lot of people do not know that I have a close working relationship with both the FIM and Infront," said Pelletier. "I went over there as the FIM Delegate, to work the events from an FIM perspective. Those connections that I've built over there help a lot, especially when at the flyaway races. Just knowing those faces can go a very long way! With the event coming here, we are constantly in communication with Infront. We are making sure that the rules are set, the paddock layout is accurate and it is executed correctly."

A fresh face, new outlook, 'perfect' team and home-field advantage – all signs point to Team USA embarking on this new chapter with the victory that they seek firmly in sight.
