3/4/2026 7:02am Agreed. The last thing I would wanna do it make it harder to weld for somebody. It’s kinda difficult finding someone who welds aluminum on a regular basis (atleast in my area). There are people who weld aluminum, but it’s more like non structural decorative stuff. I’d rather wait and find someone who is confident they can fix it right.

This is a solid piece of advice. I do my own welding, hence the prep advice. Show the crack to your welder and get their input before doing anything.

My .02 on you prepping the frame to be welded, check with the shop that you choose to weld, most shops around here wouldn't put their name on something they didn't do from start to finish.

Welding process and heat treating process depends on the aluminum alloy. I recommend reading up on the subject. 6061 alloy loses strength near the weld where the heat has degraded the material. After heat treatment, 6061 can be returned to nearly full strength. 7075 alloy is considered non weldable because it loses significant strength near and in the weld. There are alloys like 7005 used in the bicycle industry that will age back to nearly full strength if welded, air cooled and allowed to age. My amateur DIY guy self says that a competent welding shop should have no problem with that. However, I will leave myself open to being corrected by those that know better. There are some very knowledgable folks here. Paging Bearuno, Sandman, FGR01 and others to the white courtesy phone!

Anybody ever had this happen with an oversized tank on their yz 2 stroke? It happened in only 20 hours of riding and it dug into the frame pretty good. Is this gonna affect the integrity of the frame?

11/2/2021 3:26am I appreciate the replies guys, thank you. Now, any opinions about what to do with the gouge in the frame? I was thinking just build it back up with JB weld and cover it with tape so this doesn’t happen again. Hopefully it didn’t cause the frame to become weaker

11/1/2021 3:56pm The tank has a little wear, but it seems like the tank did more damage to the frame than the frame did to the tank which is odd being as aluminum is harder than plastic

At the age of 56 I bought a new 2013 150SX to save myself from dying on my '05 YZ250. Easy to ride, incredibly fun, still runs perfectly, looks awesome, and I have not died yet. Great bike. Oh yeah - 6'3" 178lbs.
