It's definitely an odd failure. With the relative fragility of Mag wheels it could have started with something as small as a surface scratch or obviously a manufacturing defect, although you'd think they'd have caught it with a magnaflux inspection.

Interesting argument that the crash could have been much worse had it happened to a bike with a conventional rear end, yet the unique stresses involved in a single sided swingarm/wheel design may have also played a part in the failure. Who knows?

And yeah, I was surprised to find close ups of the wheel, especially with the O.Z. decal in plain sight.
