Hmmm...depends on what you're wanting to ride. I-35 is sandy and rough with some technical sections. Underground is awesome though, fantastic facility they have there. I would think Underground would be good for you to try. Can't go wrong either way really.

Not new to the area...lived in Dallas my whole life but I'm getting back into the sport and just bought a new YZ 450F. Last time I was serious about riding these tracks weren't open and I keep hearing people talk about how great they are.

If you are just getting back into riding and not in shape then you might pick another track ( River Valley- Nocona) until you get your legs back under you. If you are ready for the challenge then head to I35 then make your way to Underground. You will like both of them. I35 will wear you out for sure although the 450 will make it easier. Have fun and we will see you at the tract sometime as we make it to I35 often.

Do both have sandy, clay soil? I hate hardpack.

Yes, they both have excellent dirt and prep. Underground is simply the best in Texas, I-35 runs a close second. Mostly sandy loamy dirt at Underground and I-35 is DEEP sand with a couple of spots with red dirt.

I was about to say, your decision is already made for this weekend. Underground is running their first race.

For local tracks check out www.txmotocross.com. Most tracks post practice and race schedules.

It's not DEEP. Let's not call a mule a horse here.

Go check out Swanby Tyler if you don't mind a lil drive. That was always my favorite track. Not sure how they prep it for practice tho.

Swan's awesome, though Trey rarely preps it and it's an annual membership deal. Still, Swan unprepped is as much fun as a lot of other tracks prepped, just because it is LONG and neat terrain..

The River Valley recommendation is a good one, too, to get your bearings. Also, Village Creek is probably closer than the rest.

I live about a mile from Ross Downs. Gone, but not forgotten.

We have lots of good tracks here in the DFW area. In no particular order, River Valley, Village Creek, Underground, I35, Oak Hill and Nocona are probably the best. My experience with Underground is it will kick your ass if you are out of shape. Then again, Marc Peligrino said that I chose the roughest day ever to come ride UG.

Not deep at I-35? I will admit the red spots rut up nice and don't get deep but on top of the hill, after the finish, just about everywhere there's the sand it gets deep. I guess it depends on your version of what deep is, still a kick-ass place to ride.

The acceleration bumps met the braking bumps in the middle of the straights. I'm still sore.

I like a rough track and I had fun when I could hold on, but that only lasted about 1 lap at a time. Had a bunch of new blisters on my hands when I left.

As twoboysdadtx already mentiond, the original poster would probably enjoy River Valley or Nocona the most if he doesn't have his race face on yet. Oak Hill also resumes their practice schedule after the Dallas SX. Oak Hill and River Valley are my personal favorites.

Thanks for the heads up. I know that Underground is racing. but I think they have a open practice on Saturday. Swan is a bit of a drive; I always loved that track. Looking at the pics it doesn't look like it has changed much since I was last there about 10 years ago. And as far as Ross Downs...I don't think that tracks been open since my old man was a pro.

Underground should be open for practice on Saturday in preparation for the Texas Series race on Sunday. You can expect it to be very crowded.

Ok, you got me. Ross Downs has long been closed. But you would be a fool not to give Lake Whitney a try.

Yeah, that's a great idea... I might try Lake Whitney, but if I'm gonna drive to closed track I might as well go to Mosier Valley; it's closer and has been closed for longer.

Why would he do that, with Mosier Valley right in the middle of the metroplex?

Edit: Dammit, nipped at the line!

I loved that place. Too bad it didn't last very long.
