Casal 125 mx

I m a new member on here. I am currently restoring an old Casal 125mx bike found in a shed in Portugal. I know very little about the bike. It was made in 1981 is 125cc. The engine although marked casal looks very similar to a Zundapp/cz motor. The motor is currently running a 32mm dellorto carb and the head has had some porting work done to it. As you can see below the bike is in a pretty poor repair but the engine is running.

I was hoping some one on here might have some photos of the bike or knowledge of the make etc

Very cool. There were several small European companines putting out six days enduro models in the '70s and early '80s. A friend of mine had a BPS Elan 125 enduro around '75 or so. That was a french short lived company. Mostly Sachs engines but with better quality Magura, Ceriani suspension . I've heard of Casal but like the rest of those small companies they vanished. I've got a motorcycle catalog of every manufacturer in '73. Moto Verte was the publisher. I'd say that Casal is a nice piece of moto history.

thanks very much for the info. Having stripped the bike down I am pretty certain the bike is an ex enduro competition model as although the engine is 125cc it has had some serious porting work done to the head. It is also running marzocchi forks and air resevoir rear shocks. I plan to do this bike up over the next year for riding around the hills here. I have attached a few more photos of work done so far.

I highly doubt it Richard. Maybe send an email to Motoverte and inquire, they may be able to do some archive digging. Good luck!

x2 an excellent find and the casal shown is the same model as mine although the photo is the same one. After many hours searching i think it is the only one on the net!

During the 60's, 70's and great part of the 80's, motorcycle production in Portugal was incredible.
We had many brands, mainly using Sachs and Zundapp engines bought from Germany.
Then Casal hired some german engineers and they started their own engine production.
The bikes where mainly 50cc bikes as Portugal was a very poor country and those where very cheap bikes.
When Portugal joined the European Union in 1986, then the open market made way for the japanese, german and italian brands.
The portuguese industry died slowly and today there is just one brand producing motorcycles in Portugal

During the glory days of the portuguese motorcycle industry Casal built 80.000 engines a year, so did Sachs and Zundapp. It was a great era.

Nowadays the portuguese motorcycles are being restored mainly for private collectors and 50cc motocross racing.

The information is excellent thanks very much. The articles are good although my Portugese needs practise!

I am living just a few kms from the Portimao race track in the Algarve and have many great tracks close by. Although i plan to retore the bike to original condition it will get ridden.

do you have any details of Portugese enduro or Mx clubs or where I can find them.

A quick update. I have sprayed the frame and swinging arm with primer today in readiness for the lovely fluro orange top coat at the weekend
