Laps Times Indy 2011

There have been several threads about whether or not this was a straight up Villopoto win versus Stewart. Yes it has been quoted to death that "Stewart started in dead last". Yet he rounded the first turn in about 12 or so. If the dead last talk must continue then the hole shot award needs to be handed out 100 feet past the gate rather than around the first turn. Anywho Stewart was 5 at the end of the first lap with the fast dogs in front of him. If you analyze the live timing (http://results.amasupercross.com/data/2011/10/sxm1ind.pdf) it shows some interesting stats after you get past the first lap.

If you look at total time in lap groups is lays out like this:

Laps 2-5
Villopotto - 196.054seconds
Dungey - 198.466 (-2.412)
Reed - 198.971 (-2.917)
Stewart - 199.410 (-3.356)
Brayton - 205.186 (-9.132)

Laps 6-10
Villopoto - 246.199 seconds
Stewart - 247.462 (-1.263)
Reed - 249.144 (-2.945)
Canard - 255.090 (-8.819)
Dungey - 255.311 (-9.112)

Laps 11-15
Stewart - 251.179 seconds
Dungey - 252.081 (-0.902)
Villopoto - 254.956 (-3.777)
Canard - 257.423 (-6.244)
Reed - 257.605 (-6.426)

Laps 16-20
Dungey - 257.051 seconds
Reed - 258.551 (-1.500)
Villopoto - 258.715 (-1.664)
Canard - 259.557 (-2.506)
Stewart - 260.643 (-3.592)

Keep in mind that all this is after the first lap when eveyone listed but Canard was in the top 5 and running the top 5 pace. So Villopoto was able to gap Stewart in 3 out of the 4 segments of the race. I would call that a straight up win.

points and laptimes don't matter, it's how spectacular your (fanboy) favorite rider is

I think that laps 16-20 show clearly why RD was so upset at himself and who or what ever else it is that contributed to his loss. He took full responsibiltiy but he was coming on strong.. and RV was doing all he had to to to win and thats what counts!Smile Its fun to look at these kinds of things each week including segment times etc. Bottom line is who ever crosses the finish line first is the winner.

It was straight up. They all started on the same gate.

I agree with you. I hate all the debate on straight up or not, blah blah. If they all start on the same gate, whoever wins won straight up imo.

Reed - 257.605 (-6.426)

Laps 16-20
Dungey - 257.051 seconds

what the stats show is that RV got the job done methodically. He got the lead on lap one, gapped the field for ten laps, took no risks through backmarker lappers through the third quarter and in the last five laps he did what he had to do to put the race win beyond any doubt.
Dungey had to go hard at the end because he was the only guy with a target; the third segment shows that Reed was struggling, but the fourth shows he has the character to dig deep to keep what he has.
A true pro only races as fast as he needs to.

Stewart was really close right before lap where he almost crashed twice. After that lap Villopoto was gone. Had stewart not made those mistakes I think he would have caught villopoto.

Stewart is better at ripping fast laps, and RV is better at being consistant. simple as that.

Good post, thanks. Really shows how mistakes are huge. One screw up keeps you from doing a whole section, that really costs you. You can also see the effect of lappers and the track breaking down.

Well stated. The race is from when the gate drops for everyone at the same time until the checkered flag flies. Getting good starts and not making mistakes is part of the deal and in all forms of racing many times the absolute fastest person does not always win.
