This has become political, and there is a lot on the line for those who have future plans for new plants. Future plants create a lot of jobs, and huge contracts for those who supply the needed materials. I know this doesn't sound real good right now, but it's reality.
The experts hands are tied, and there is nothing they can do.
As always, money rules, and when money is involved, compassion and common sense is tossed out the window.
BTW: What I was getting at early this morning is, that when experts start saying stupid things for no other reason than to show they are being reactive, you can bet something is wrong.

However what we have been hearing, as far as I know, certainly is not from experts. We've heard warnings and small evacuations announced from the govt. and we've heard that there have been non-nuclear explosions. They are making it out in the press like this is something that will have large amounts of casualties. I'm not a betting man but I would gamble that at the end of the day, there are less than five casualties stemming from radioactive exposure.
As far as I can see, the hype in the U.S. press is completely unwarranted. Check out some of the links I posed in the other thread with credible info, also check the link that dcmx posted above. This type of frenzy is certainly not uncommon for the topic.
I believe, from the info I have, that reasonable precautions are being taken and the international experts are completely aware of the situation.

This plant should have been shut down years ago.
You have to wonder if they were initially assuming they'd find a way to get grid power within a day or so, but that didn't happen and by the time they realized that wasn't going to happen, they were in a full-scale catastrophe mode and just trying to make it from hour to hour.
Secondly, the containments are designed to contain the fuel in a full meltdown - you have to wonder if you'd be better off if you stopped putting water in the reactor vessel because it inevitably boils off, creates pressure and has to be vented, and when you vent it, you're venting radioactive steam into the air. Would it be better in the long run to just let the stuff melt and hope the containments are strong enough to keep it all inside? Would it be better to just let it reach an equilibrium and put your faith in the containment system?

I'm interested in hearing why you think that plant should have been closed down years ago because as I understand it, it has survived moderately through the gnarliest natural disaster any nuclear plan has ever faced.
And the international agencies, if they didn't like what was going on at those facilities to begin with, with their lack of respect, I'd imagine them being highly critical to begin with. If shit was goin' bad, I could very well see them jumping on board saying how poorly designed the facilities were. Instead they appear to be honest and open about the situation.

Is it possible they could have continued running? Or did the shake up affect the steam turbines or some other vital system?
They certainly would have had enough power to run the cooling pumps.
Or they could take a power system for a drilling rig out there - those things make a huge amount of power to run mud pumps and draw works...they just need a bunch of redneck shadetree engineers, give 'em a blank check and the phone numbers of the CEOs of Toshiba and Stewart and Stevenson and all those kinds of companies, and they'll have more power than you can use.
There had to be a way. It's just electricity.
Falsifying maintenance and safety records.
What's left of No.3 reactor on left. No.4 in the middle. Looking from outside, it keeps getting worse and worse... Japanese engineers don't seem to be able to stop this. I'm counting on American engineers who joined them.
