Yea man, appreciate it LOL!, I have one good dealer and he s the parts man, and my riding buddy, gives me killer deals, and i try to support the dealership he works, what i don t save on one thing, i will on another and it keeps him on the good side of the boss, because i send alot of friends to him for bikes or parts, gear etc! The only prices he can t beat are the killer closeout prices that the big companies offer. Because they have to empty the warehouses!

yeah, at this point im just trying to find a great helmet at a great price, im not trying to sacrifice safety, just trying to find some deals. im thinking about this:

+1 on trying it on first before you buy it online. I recently bought (4) helmets on closeout because they were so damn cheap and there is no consistency in size between manufacturers. I got one of those TLD helmets you posted a link to for $179....great buy.

So price is more important than protection to you? If so then I might suggest one of these:

Quality is always a must, but bto sports has shoeis on sale, and that does nt mean less protection, just because they are on sale! That just goes to show how much that stuff is marked up in price!

Umm, did you not read what I wrote? My whole deal here is about trying the helmet on before you buy it. It has nothing to do with price.

My son had a big get off this weekend and bike landed on him.

Helmet is cracked in 4 of 5 different places. He got up and rode back to the pits.

Had a small cut on his chin & sore sholder.
Helmet did it's job 100%.

VFX-W

It's the best fitting helmet we tried and VERY glad we spent the extra $$$$ on it.

We will buy another.

The Troy Lee Air you're considering is an excellent helmet, quality shell, very nice liner, good stuff for the price or irrespective of price. Sizing is consistent with Arai -- not to say the interior shape is identical by any means, but if you're a medium in one you're a medium in the other. I've recently retired a Windham Arai and am now switching back and forth between the Air and an SE3.... I like both the TLD lids very very nearly as much as I did the Arai. I don't think you're giving up quality or safety with a TLD. Hope that helps a little.

Look inside the liner. If it says "made in china", run away.

Shoei VFX-W, there are some good deals still floating around on previous year models. Best helmet I've ever worn, period.

People just don't want to believe this article!

So many people have fallen for the marketing ploy of dollars = safety. Not so.

My number one rule is to only buy a helmet that I can try on. A perfect fit is extremely important and you can't get a perfect fit if you can't try the helmet on. A perfect fitting helmet will feel almost too tight. With a bit of time it will break in and be just right. If it's too loose, whats the point of wearing it?
Don't buy by brand, find out the shape of your head and what fits YOU ! not Chad...

understand how it's made...

Don't buy a plastic shell, ( too hard they bounce your head results in neck injuries)

Woven shells ( fibrglass or carbon) absorb more energy from a crash (the more carbon less weight more $$$$)

I remember years ago Coleen Milsaps was ranting about the quality of protection of the Fox helmets and telling people it wasn't recommended for use at MTF. But that was a long time ago.

Do you have a link to the study that proves that woven shells work better than plastic, or is this just your opinion?

Read the link that mtnr posted and you might not be so convinced.

hahaha...personally I couldnt do it either but if your on a budget you can find almost brand new stuff for cheap right now.
When it comes to head protection I just bite the bullet and spend the money.

Since the OP is interested in Bell I'll share my experience with them as we've had 4 Moto-8's in the last few seasons. I love the fit but the quality leaves something to be desired. We had to return three of the four helmets over the course of a season due to them falling apart. I will say Bell's customer service was awesome and they replaced all three without question including one that was well out of warranty but based on the issues we had I've taken the Moto-8 off the list of potential lids for us in the fuutre.

As many have already said, get a Shoei or Arai. Either one is going to protect you the best. If you are tight on cash, just get a solid white or black one. Your head is much more important than how you look out there.

I have both the Arai VX-Pro3 and the Shoei VFX-W. Personally, I think the Shoei is a better helmet due to the fact it wraps around your head more. I am on my second VFX-W due to a serious crash that resulted in losing 8 hours of memory. I can't even imagine what would have happened to me if I was in anything other than that helmet.

Also, I have heard about Fox V3 snapping in the mouth area, so be careful with those.

Oh, and to add to my post above, I am a big advocate of helmet quality. Every helmet in my family's trailer is either a Shoei or Arai. I have seen many people get knocked out because of their helmet. I have even seen one of my friends go into a coma wearing a SixSixOne helmet and can't ride anymore. I know no one ever plans on crashing, but crashes happen and why not take every safety precation you can to help you get back on the bike.

in all fairness you cant say someone was knocked out because of their helmet quality....your buddy would probably been just as hurt no matter what the helmet. There is no doubt Shoei and Arai are a better helmet then the rest but you hit your head hard enough it dosnt matter. At least if you get hurt wearing the best possible equipment you know you did all you could!

Great article. Everyone ought to take the time to read through it.

Got a link for part 2?

For all you that preach only Shoei or Arai .... do you have any lab testing to back up that they provide greater protection?

okay, so im sure this has been asked before, but im curious as of what your opinions are on helmets. Im not trying to spend 600 dollars on arai, but rather a middle of the road affordable helmet. any ideas or comments?
Find a good deal on a Shoei and never look back. I found a deal a while back at BTO for 329.99.

Fly Formula is awesome upper end helmet, and the Fly F2 Carbon is as well - but much lower price.
