The US is oil independent. You stated that "everyone get ready for fuel shortages" it's not going to happen as much as you would like it to.

No, I would not like it to. Where did you read that?

US oil reserves are at a 40+ year low. That shouldn't be, if US is oil independant. I even read Costco started limiting motor oil purchases. It's happened before - last shortage crisis was ironically also Iran related,  late 70s. Thinking it could never happen again is a bit of the head in sand effect.

Retirement, so to speak, is frikkin awesome.

Used to think it was hanging around doing nothing.

Still spend just as much shop time building stuff.

Just now it's in my home shop, walking downstairs to work instead of spending time driving to a jobsite.

Building stuff on my own timeline for customers, paying closer attention to detail, instead of multiple projects semi rushed to completion by a move in date.

And cranking the sound system without someone entering my area telling me to turn it down.

My first grandchild played a huge role in our decision to return to the Northwest. And it was definitely a great decision!

I never understood what people meant when they said that your love for your grandkids is different, and maybe even more intense, than your love for your children. I understand it now. I might not describe it as ‘greater’, but it’s different for sure and it’s pretty humbling just to be able to watch them become themselves.

Congratulations!

"The regime that replaced the Shah is not a good one.  Is it worse than the Shah?  Again, depends upon one's perspective, but I think most can agree that the 'regime' before the Shah was better than either of the next two".

What an interesting take. The current Islamic government may not be worse than the previous Iranian government ran by the Shah? I must say your perspective is unbelievably twisted. Under the Shah the people saw a large increase in standard of living even though it was unequal. Shah was far from perfect but life was far better for the Iranian citizens than the current pure evil regime. You must not have seen where the Iranian singer Ahmadi was sentenced to 74 lashes for performing without a habib. The Shah was bad but not that bad.

The previous regime under Mosaddegh dissolved the countries parliament. It was effectively at that time a dictatorship. That dictatorship was courting the USSR. That is the primary reason MI5 and the CIA stepped in to stop the USSR from controlling Iran's oil and expanding it's reach.

The problem with your perspective is in always trying to find the US and it's allies at fault for the ill's of the world. More good has come from America, Canada, England, France, etc. than has bad. Absolutely no good came from the USSR and communism, nor has any good come from radical Islamic governments. That's what I mean when figuring out who the good guys are as compared to the bad guys. That's as simple as I can make it for you.

You can't see the forest through the trees.

You’re still proving my point. You’ve already decided who the 'good guys' are, so anything we do gets justified and anything Iran does becomes 'terrorism'.

I don’t like Iran’s government. The vast majority of Americans don’t. But some Iranians do support it, and from their perspective the U.S. has spent 70+ years interfering in their country, backing their enemies, arming proxies, imposing sanctions, supporting covert operations and using military force.

Iran has absolutely targeted U.S. troops and interests in the Middle East. But Iran has essentially never launched conventional attacks on the U.S. homeland, while U.S. interference in Iran predates the Islamic Republic by decades.

You don’t have to agree with their perspective. But if you’re incapable of even seeing it, then 'we’re the good guys and they’re the bad guys' isn’t even remotely a try at honest, objective analysis. It’s just tribalism.

Remember, had the Colonies lost the Revolutionary War they would have been considered traitorous 'terrorists'.  From the perspective of the British, they definitely were considered that for a long, long time.

You act as if Iran and the US are on the same level. I’m pretty sure that you would rather live in the United States over Iran , or maybe not. I’m well aware the the US isn’t perfect in world affairs, but I certainly wouldn’t want to live anywhere in the middle east over the US and especially Iran.

Of course I’d rather live in the U.S. than Iran. But 'where would you rather live?' is a pretty useless test for whether military action or regime change is justified.

I wouldn’t want to live in Louisiana either. It incarcerates people at roughly twice Oregon’s rate and close to three times Washington’s. That doesn’t mean I think all (or even most) Louisianans are evil, that Louisiana should be bombed, or that Oregon and Washington should get to impose regime change on Baton Rouge.

You can think another government is worse than yours without concluding that anything done to that country is therefore justified.

That’s the distinction I’m making.

I’ll push back pretty hard on the 'anti-American' label.

To me, being American isn’t about reflexively defending whatever our government does simply because it’s our government. It’s about advocating for what is right, even when the right answer is inconvenient, unpopular, or against our short-term interests.  If we criticize Russia, Iran or China for interfering in other countries, backing proxies, overthrowing governments or killing civilians, then we ought to be willing to apply the same standards to ourselves.

That isn’t anti-American. I’d argue it's the exact opposite. Blindly excusing something because America did it is nationalism, not patriotism.

I want the U.S. to be the 'good guys' because we do the right thing, not because we simply declare ourselves the 'good guys' afterward.

It’s really not that complicated.

Big Oil is a massive global business and they will sell to who ever pays them the most for the product. Oil is not all the same so some will not work for some things. What the USA has can not do it all.

Trump might flip and end this whole world wide shortage by stopping attacks on Iran. He might do that in an attempt to get voters to stop massively hating him and vote his way in November but at this point thats doubtful

Our goals, and the goals of the West in general, include restraining global terrorism and controlling nuclear proliferation.  I’m just not convinced the tactics used by the Trump Administration will be successful in either.

History has proven bombing campaigns alone won’t get the job done. And boots on the ground have varying levels of success.  Trump’s strategy included an internal Iranian uprising that has yet to materialize. Because nothing unifies a people like a common foe.

"I don’t dispute that the Iranian government is brutally authoritarian, and I don’t dispute that most Iranians appear to want something different. But your claim that only Islamic nut jobs support it is just something you made up. Surveys consistently find a good sized minority (roughly 15–20% in recent years) who actually do support continuing the Islamic Republic."

The 15% to 20% minority you are referring to is most likely radical Islam. How do I know that? They support the radical Islamist regime, once again logic and common sense.

"Iran absolutely has plotted assassinations and terrorist acts inside the U.S., I’m not denying that. DOJ has prosecuted multiple recent Iranian-directed plots. But a foiled assassination plot is not Iran launching a conventional military attack on the United States."

You are not reading that statement I made properly. I clearly stated that Iran has NOT launched a  conventional attack on the US. If Iran had the ability they would have attacked America a long time ago. Have you ever heard Iranian Islamic terrorist chanting death to America? They mean it. Of course I am aware that Iran has plotted assassinations and terrorist attacks within America as I clearly stated.

You refer to my statement as tribalism, I refer to it as common sense. While America and the rest of the free world try to make lives better for their citizens to varying degrees of success , the Islamic republic does the exact opposite. Hear about the two twins dragged from their bedrooms, put into solitary confinement, one sentenced to death and one to 30 something years in prison. Their crime? Participating in demonstrations against the Islamic government.

It's very obvious to clear thinking people who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Your efforts to dispute that there are no good guys and bad guys (governments) in the world  fly's in the face or reality. Just ask those twins.
