First post here.
My wife and I are already planning a Europe trip around MXDN 2027, and I’ve pretty much got her talked into going to Assen for race day.
Plan right now is Louisiana to London for a few days, train to Amsterdam for a few days, then train to Assen Sunday morning and back to Amsterdam that night.
She has very little motocross experience. I’ve been around moto a long time but have never been to a GP or MXDN. Neither of us has been to Europe.
Is doing Assen as a one-day trip from Amsterdam reasonable, or would we be way better off staying in Assen Saturday and/or Sunday night?
Also appreciate any tips on transportation, where to stay, tickets, seating, etc.
Amsterdam-Assen-Amsterdam on a one day format with a train is not something i would recommend as a Dutchie.
A train could be a pain in the ass sometimes in Holland, with not having allot of time to play around with i should take it a bit more easy and stay the whole weekend in Assen and visit both days the MXDN Event.
Train in Holland runs with NS company. You can buy tickets online at ns.nl
Staying should be solid at Van Der Valk Hotel Assen. Good rooms and place to eat. Not super far from the TT Circuit. Should need a taxi from there or maybe there will be going busses to the track from that place.
Seating depends if you wanne go normal or VIP. With the normal tickets you can take youre seat at the tribune. No seats or rows are reserved. Just arrive on time and you can take any seat you want.
Vip is on the other Side off the tribune and track.
Good thing about the tribune is, you can see the whole track and all the racing for 90%, while VIP is only the infield and screens.
My wife and my mum stayed in Amsterdam for the weekend last time and my dad and I went to the race but we stayed locally overnight sat night. I think there and back in a day from Amsterdam would be a lot
MXdN is best if you go both days. Saturday is qualifying races and lots to see in pits and partying in campgrounds. Trying to do this event in one day would be hard.
Agree, do two days if you can. MXON is fantastic, though I am not sure how the atmosphere at Assen will compare in person considering its at a road racing circuit? Regardless you will have a blast, Europe is a great experience. My two youngest boys and I are going to Ernee this Fall for MXON. Can't wait. Atmosphere was lacking a bit at Matterley Basin in 2024, I think in part because attendance was not that great, and everyone is so spread out. It was still fine, but it was better at Red Bud in 18 and 22, and even Ironman last year. I always heard the Ernee atmosphere has no equal.
Everything will seem small, haha. Small countries, small cars, small houses/apartments, small portions = skinnier people, lol. Food has always been good everywhere I have been.
I feel like NL is more expensive than most of Western Europe, but the last time I was there in 2024 I still feel like it was cheaper than the US. Americans have it pretty good right now from a travel perspective.
Just keep a hand on your belongings AT ALL TIMES on any trains or mass transit, especially in London. Have fun!

Thanks for the replies. I think we will consider 1 or 2 nights in Assen to make it easier.
I know some will say the atmosphere will not compare to the traditional moto tracks, but I assume my wife will appreciate the concrete and covered grand stands, especially if the weather is not ideal.
