What about teams like L&M and JGR? Do their riders draw a check from the factories?

If we were still offering the Engine Ice $100,000.00 Privateer Bonus, I believe Chad would have been eligible.
I will look for the agreement, but if I remember right the following parameters were the defining measures.

1. Salary from an OEM (no)
2. Races for an OEM support/Satellite team (no)
3. Races out of an OEM team vehicle (no)

I believe Chad would have qualified under that policy

Wouldn't he also have qualified when he raced for L&M?

Sounds like the parameters need some adjustments, there are a few more points missing

Is that true for all the big non-factory teams? JGR, Geico, etc? TwoTwo is the only big team not getting a salary from a factory? I don't know, just curious.

My understanding, some have and some haven't.
I believe KW does, in part or in whole

JGR, no

He pays his way, writes the checks, buys his parts, doesn't have 15 guys running around wiping his butt or
2 guys standing in the first turn waiting to help.

The only reason Honda is willing to help is because they know they screwed up with Grant and are in damage control.

If I was Reed I'd paint the whole bike blue.

Privateer with big pockets and a ton of experience, a privateer all the same.

He rides for a team so he's no more of a privateer than many of the others out there in my opinion. He just happens to own the team but in that capacity he is a "team owner". He's got a Honda logo on his web site so they must be supplying him with something. He also mentioned them in his press release announcing his team:

http://www.racerxonline.com/2010/11/09/twotwo-motorsports-press-release

"I’m excited to be riding Honda motorcycles and to have Honda’s support with the program and them to be supporting TwoTwo Motorsports," he said.

Then BBMX is not a privateer team?
They ride Suzukis

How about Ti Lube with Goerke and Boni?
They're not privateers?

Privateer or not, he could have gone back to Australia and counted his money, but he formed his own team, risked his own money and put his body back out on the line to do it his way. I don't care what his technical classification is, it was a great ride and he really knows what to do to win. Good on ya', Chad.

Is Stewart a privateer?

Was MC a privateer when he won championships on the Yamaha?

Damn it Ralph said he was a privateer so that settles it. TwoTwo is a privateer.

Nope. Another reason Chad isn't a privateer is because he started his team with Factory money (money he earned as a non-privateer). Smile

Does that make her not privateer??
Oh c'mon! Oprah has NEVER had the corner speed to compete with the top ten. Sure, she can jump and is awesome in the whoops, but is far from being a complete package worthy of factory support.

What about KW's wins? I'm not sure what the link between Honda and Factory Connection is?

x2

Reedy is a privateer. Even if he gets some top works parts, he still pulled the team together, and is doing everything based off of his wallet. That is FAR from the sweet life the factory riders are getting who don't have to worry about anything other than the race.

Why do we even bother with the term privateer...

It seems long ago it would have been easier to say non-factory...

This is surprising coming from someone who's usually choking on Reed. The only thing he had that a true privateer doesn't have is his transmission. Everything else he's running can be bought. The major difference between privateer and factory is the amount of parts at your disposal to test and the R and D. Reed is far from factory in those two aspects.

really? those are the only two differences between a privateer and a factory rider? or as you put it, the "major" difference. there are so many more differences between the two that you shouldnt even be commenting on the issue.

youve obviously not spent time in both camps.

anyone who's ever raced at multiple levels knows that reed is no factory rider, but he's far from being a privateer. theres four DISTINCT types of riders out there right now.

factory
satellite
private TEAM
privateer

its rediculous how many people just dont get it. but reed is on a private team. which makes him in a worlds better position than being a privateer.

just because he owns the team and invested his own money to get it started doesnt mean hes a privateer. hes on a private team. that he happens to own. but a private team no less. just the same as jgr or harts team.

and if you dont think there is a major difference between being on a private team and being a privateer, go tell that to all the kids who are parked in the PRIVATEER PITS AREA (of which reed is nowhere near).

its not even close. this discussion is so stupid.

none the less i still think what reed is accomplishing is VERY impressive and im definitely rooting for him.
Looks like even Reedy admits that he's on a Private Team in this interview-http://www.motoonline.com.au/2011/02/21/post-race-with-chad-reed-3/

So about the Nike boots, have they ever NOT been on the podium in AMA MX / SX since Bubba and Dungey started wearing them???
